We Are Teachers Grant – Please Vote!

my library

I normally don’t post anything personal or work-related on here, but I need your help to start a new project in my library.

I am currently participating in a contest sponsored by AccuCut and WeAreTeachers.  I submitted a grant project for creating a student-run book review wall in my media center to encourage students to have discussions about books and to help give them a sense of ownership in the library.  The grant money would help us to purchase the supplies we need to start the book review wall.

The winners of the grants are chosen through an online voting process – the top five projects with the most votes get $200 to use towards their project and a Flip video camera to document it.  The project with the most votes gets $500.

I’m almost in 10th place right now, so I just need about 400 more votes or so to get in the top five.

If you have a minute, I really appreciate it if you would vote for my project.  Simply follow this link and search for “Diana” to find my project  Thanks!!!

Voting runs until March 31st.
Thank you so much for your support!

“Mature is fancy for acting grown up”

Last week, Style Symmetry was having a challenge to create an outfit inspired by one of the images from the Wardrobe Remix group on Flickr.  This particular day, I was looking for some inspiration for a new way to dress up jeans for work.  I came across this outfit by Elsa, and decided to break out my (only) button-down and mix it up.  It wasn’t cold enough to layer a long-sleeved sweater, so I went for a sweater vest instead.  I tried adding a belt like she did, but it was not flatttering at all on me.  I then added the pearls (under the collar) to imitate the lovely statement necklace she wore.

I like how professional this outfit is, and I think that looks like this could work really well once I finally get a full-time job as a librarian (it’s been six months since I finished my degree; someone hire me!).  However, the outfit didn’t really feel very “me”.  It felt to simple, basic and ordinary.  The bright colors and pattern of the vest helped, but it still didn’t feel quite right.  I think I might like it better with my denim pencil skirt.

The other thing that this outfit made me realize is that I’ve become spoiled from wearing so much jersey knit fabric.  The moment I put on something stiff and structured, my body recoils and begs to crawl into a comfy jersey dress and leggings.  And fabrics like this button-down wrinkle so horribly.  I refuse to wear polyester, so buying no-wrinkle sythetics is not an option for me.  I think that maybe I just need to search harder for a button-down that feels more me, and that perhaps is a bit more comfortable than this one.  Anthropologie has some gorgeous ones right now, and I’m hoping to get one (or two) with my birthday discount in the new few weeks.

Do you have a love-hate relationship with button-downs?  How do you dress the up to fit in with your style?

    Daily Outfit: Menswear (For Ladies)

Once again, Kim’s Inspiration calendar lead to today’s outfit.  Tuesday’s theme was menswear, and it just so happens that I got myself a waistcoat for a mere $10 at Ann Taylor LOFT on Friday.  This gave me the perfect excuse to wear it.  Layering may seem like a bad idea in the summer, but it’s so hot and humid in Florida right now that no matter what you’re wearing, you’ll be sweating after five minutes outside.  My new summer motto is: “You’re going to sweat anyway, so you might as well sweat in style”.

I normally don’t like to wear primarily black outfits, as I think that 1) the color is way overused 2) it looks like you’re going to a funeral and 3) it’s not exactly summery.  I made it work for me in this outfit by using a light cream tee and bright turquoise accessories for contrast.  I think it’s the beautiful punches of color that really steal the show.

I just found that beautiful turquoise croc print belt while thrifting at Salvation Army last week.  I had several great finds there, including my first ever Boden skirt!  The best surprise came when I checked out, and discovered that everything was 50% off.  That made this belt cost a mere $1!

I really want to buy more colorful, chunky jewelry like this necklace.  I’ve been wearing it a lot, because I love how it can instantly brighten up an outfit.

So here’s a quick question for you.  I ordered a suit from J Crew, but I’m not sure if it’s going to arrive in time for my first interview.  Could wearing something like this be appropriate for an interview?  Or do I need to go more conservative?  I’m interviewing at an elementary school, and I’m considering trying to find a black blazer that I could wear if my suit doesn’t arrive in time.  What do you think?
