Shopping Ban: Week 6

scarf

Magenta Vintage Vera Silk Scarf  = $8 at local antique shop

(it’s much more vibrant than the image lets on)

Well, one thing I’ve learned is that it’s a lot easier to stick to a shopping ban when you are broke.  When my bank account is extremely low, I don’t really feel any temptation to shop and over-spend.  Rather, I feel more like staying home and working with what I already have – fixing items that need alteration, working on sewing projects, etc.

However, I have noticed that when I am out and about and need to kill time before an appointment, I will usually go into a store and browse.  Sometimes this will get me into trouble with impulse buys.  This week it wasn’t too bad though.

I decided to kill some time this week by browsing in a local antique shop.  I find these particularly fun to browse, because while I love looking at antiques, I will rarely buy anything.  I checked out the jewelry section first, but most of it was way out of my price range (including a gorgeous $39 jade necklace).  Then I proceded to look at the rest of the shop.  I figured I wouldn’t get anything, but then I had to stop and check out the 50% off section, because a beautiful burst of magenta caught my eye.  That magenta happened to be a gorgeous silk Vera scarf, on sale for a mere $8.  While money was quite tight this week, I could handle $8.  I’ve been wanting to add a greater variety of colors to my wardrobe, and magenta is one I particularly like.  The size and shape of the scarf are perfect too.  It’s versatile enough to be worn as a headband, around the neck or on a purse.  I also really love the fact that it’s a solid color, because most of my scarves are patterned.

This was all I bought this week, and I had $11.50 to spend.  This means that $3.50 will carry over to next week.  Woo-hoo!

Shopping Ban: Week 5

So, after not buying much for the past several weeks, this week ended up being all about juggling the numbers.  At the beginning of this week, I still had $80 in graduation money that could be spent any way I wanted.  I also had $75 in accumulated ban money that could be spent in thrift stores, consignment stores, on Ebay or on Etsy.  I’m realizing that it’s actually better for me not to let money accumulate like this, because it makes me likely to go over (which I did).  But I was waiting for my first full paycheck, so I couldn’t spend it earlier.  Anyhow, it all works out, and I didn’t go over too badly.  Here’s how I spent it.

While at the beach, I was getting really tired of my Crocs.  I have nothing against Crocs in general, but personally they were making me feel a bit frumpy, and they just weren’t cutting it comfort wise.  I was walking a ton, and I find that my feet tend to get sweaty in Crocs, leading to rubbing and blisters.  My hotel just happened to be within walking distance from John’s Pass, a tourist destination which also happens to be home to a Walking Company store.  I stopped in, feeling extra frumpy in my Crocs and socks (gasp!), and I found a pair of Keen sandals in the most beautiful shade of blue and on sale.  And my boyfriend actually liked the colorway (we don’t often agree on colors).  I decided to try them on, and they fit like a glove.  They were so amazingly comfortable.  So I decided to shell out my graduation money, and I don’t regret it at all.  I literally walked in them all day that day, and I had no blisters when I finally crashed at the end of the evening.  These sandals will be perfect for trips to the beach, Busch Gardens, the park, biking, etc.

(Apparently this was a pretty rare colorway, because I can’t seem to find any in this color online)

So that left me with $7 of graduation money left.  Rewind a few days to a jaunt I made to a new consignment store before my beach trip.  I’m going to a wedding in San Diego in October, and I wanted to get a nice new dress to wear to it.  I originally looked for a new dress that I could buy with graduation money, but couldn’t find anything I really loved at a good price.  I decided to challenge myself to find one second-hand, for under $80.  I visited a new local consignment store, My Mosh Posh, that specializes in carrying high quality designers.  They actually had an authentic Chanel suit! (though at $1000+, it was a bit out of my price range).  I found several dresses that were a little less expensive than that uber couture item, and I bought not only one, but two gorgeous dresses!  For only $40 each, which was not bad at all, considering that they were practically new, and both good brands.  The brown dress will be for the wedding, and I’ll probably wear the navy and white striped dress with a cardigan to the rehearsal dinner.  Both will also be wonderful for work and play. So now for the math: $7 is left of graduation money.  Putting that towards this purchase, there is $73 that will come from ban money, since the dresses were bought at a consignment shop.  That leaves $2 of ban money left.

So with $2 of ban money left, I didn’t go over right?  Well, no, because I bought one more thing.  Going in reverse order again, before I bought any of the above items, I bought a vintage sweater guard on Etsy for $5.50.  This puts me at $3.50 over, so I’ll take that amount out of next week’s ban money, leaving me with $11.50 to spend next week.  Overall, I don’t think that was too bad.  I’m extremely happy with what I bought, and I can tell that this ban is really helping me to only buy things I really love.

By the way, this might be just a minor technicallity, but should tax and/or shipping be counted against ban money?  In other words, those dresses were $40 before tax.  Should the amount of the tax be taken out of ban money as well, or is that fussing with the details too much?

Shopping Ban: Week 3

Fluid Movement

Fluid Movement Top in Dark Gray  $58

I still didn’t spend any of my thrifting/Etsy/vintage allowance this week, so I’ll be saving it up and hopefully get some awesomeness on Etsy.  There will probably be a post soon debating what I should get.

Per my shopping ban rules, I am allowed one $50 free day per month, which I can spend wherever I please.  I am also allowed to spend gift money on whatever I please, since it isn’t a part of my budget.  Today, I took my free day for August and went to Anthropologie with Alechia.  And I realized that it’s very hard to find something for under $50 at Anthro.  Since I got some money for my graduation, I could go a little bit above that amount, but I exercised some restraint.

Eventually, I narrowed my choices down to this plum v-neck tank, this wine v-neck blouse, this amazing navy cardi/blazer and the above blouse.  I really, really loved this wool bolero, but it was way out of my price range.  I ended up deciding on the Fluid Movement top in charcoal grey for several reasons.  It looks amazing on me.  It’s in a color that I don’t have a lot of, but would like to have more of.  It’s a solid.  And the main reason: it has a neckline that is very different from many of my other blouses.  I have a lot of v-necks, and while I loved both v-neck blouses, I wanted something different.  The cardi/blazer was amazing as well, so I’m going to wait and see if it goes on sale.

You may notice that the price of this blouse was over $50.  I used $8 of my graduation money to cover the rest, so it’s not cheating.

I felt like I really exercised a lot of restraint while at Anthro.  I would normally have spend $200+ and bought all of the items I loved, but instead I spent some time thinking carefully about what I really needed.  I like the way this shopping ban is making me think.

What I'm lovin': Chadwicks

Back when I was 18, I wore a dress from Chadwicks when I was a bridesmaid in my cousin’s wedding.  I hadn’t given the company much thought since then.  Sure, I loved my dress, but I always associated them with formal wear.  Lately though, I’ve noticed them popping up everywhere.  When I saw the amazing French Jacket featured over at Fashionably Fab at 50 Plus, I knew I had to bop on over to their website.  And I’m in love!  Many of their garments are made with natural fibers, the color selection is amazing, the photography is eye-catching, and the prices are very affordable.

What I'm Lovin': Sock Dreams

I realize that we are totally entering the dead heat of summer in this hemisphere, and yet here I am blogging about socks.  But this isn’t just any sock website.  Sock Dreams, which I found out about through Audi of Fashion for Nerds, has some of the most gorgeous socks, tights and leggings around.  These are all items which I refuse to thrift, mostly because of the ick factor associated with used items of such types.  I’ll probably be buying some leggings from them for the summer, and then some cozy knee socks and tights next fall.

What I'm lovin': Pretty and walkable shoes

I realize my title is somewhat vague, so I’ll clarify.  Last October, I got to go to New York City.  I bought my Born Codders for the trip and absolutely loved them.  I walked a ton, yet they didn’t hurt my feet.  The cherry red color and mary jane strap kept me stylish.  Those shoes made a huge difference in my enjoyment of the trip.

Flash-forward to this summer.  I’m hoping to go to Chicago in June.  And while I’ll definitely be taking my Codders, I’d love to buy a second pair of comfortable shoes that will look great with pants or skirts.  I’ll probably be wearing lots of skirts and dresses, as the weather will be warm, so I want shoes that will look good without socks or tights.

Here’s some of the possibilities that I’m debating.

What I'm lovin': Boden's Summer 09 Collection

I posted a few months ago about Boden’s spring collection.  I still haven’t bought anything from them yet, but it’s more from a lack of funds ( and my struggle to learn how to control them) than a lack of desire.  I just got the summer catalogue today, and I am already smitten with the summer offerings.  With the warm climate of Florida, many of these are absolutely perfect for warm, casual days (or trips to the beach).  And there are so many gorgeous cotton dresses and skirts!  And such wonderful prints and colors!  I need to find a Boden shopping spree somewhere.

Some new guidelines for April

3393255712_0fe1ae6ef3

Well, the month of March didn’t work out so well for my budget.  I went over again, just like in January.  And now I’m looking at how much of my loan I have left to get me through til the next one near the end of May, and folks, things are going to be tight.  Even though I really don’t want to create more restrictions for myself, I think that I’m going to need them if I don’t want to end up living paycheck to paycheck like I did in December when I used up my loan too quickly.  I’m just setting guidelines, not rules, because I think I do best with a bit of flexibility.  Usually if I try to set strict rules, I end up breaking them and then rebelling and ignoring them.

So here’s some new guidelines for my shopping and spending these next two months:

  • Don’t buy anything that is black, brown or navy:  I have way to many dark colors in my wardrobe, so I need to brighten things up.
  • Only buy Spring/Summer items.  By the time fall and winter get here, I will hopefully have a full-time job, so I can buy that stuff then.
  • Work on filling the gaps in my wardrobe:  I’m writing up a list of items that my wardrobe is currently lacking, and working on filling up those holes first.
  • Only shop at consignment, thrift, outlet stores, or online:  This is definitely only a temporary guideline, and is flexible.  A large part of my over-spending in the previous months has come from going to the mall and using coupons or going to sales (Express, Ann Taylor Loft, etc).  While I have been getting good deals, I usually end up spending more than I should, and sometimes I end up buying stuff I don’t really love just to use a coupon.  I still love these stores, but I think I need to take a break from them for a few months.  Rediscovering how to thrift could be very beneficial for me, and I really need to take more advantage of the great thrift and vintage shops in my area.
  • For now, quantity over quality:  Yes, I am a quality girl.  But right now, the way my wardrobe is, I really just need to get more items in general.  But I still won’t buy polyester.

These are just guidelines, not strict rules, so if I veer once or twice that’s okay.  And one rule I have that trumps all:  if I absolutely fall in love with something the second I try it on, I will buy it.  There’s only so many items out there that are absolutely perfect, and you should always snatch them up whenever that occurs.

What I'm lovin': Bright and beautiful colors

I want color
I want color – by SimpleElegance1 on Polyvore.com

I’m feeling a bit under the weather this week, with a stuffy nose and slightly sore throat.  Nothing too bad, just enough to make me not want to get out of bed.  After looking in my closet this morning and trying to figure out what to wear, I began feeling even more depressed.  It is fully Spring now, yet my closet has so little color.  There’s plenty of black, brown, navy, gray.  But what about blue, green, red, purple?  What about lemon and peach and turquoise and lilac?\

I’ve gone over budget both in January and this month, mostly due to clothes/shoes shopping.  And yet every morning, I still find it difficult to put together an outfit that flatters and isn’t an exact repeat of something I wore the week before.  I’ve been purchasing new items, yet it seems that they may not be the right ones for me right now, because I’m still very unsatisfied with my wardrobe.

So here’s my new challenge for myself: during the month of April, I am not allowed to buy anything black, brown or navy.  Everything needs to have color or at least be a lighter neutral like khaki or gray.  Of course, I’m open to exceptions if I try on something and it looks totally freakin’ awesome on me, and happens to be black, brown or navy.  But right now I think that I really, really need to focus on brightening up my wardrobe.  I need more flowy and flattering skirts and dresses.  I need more bright and colorful blouses and layering pieces.  And I need some non-dowdy jackets that aren’t black or brown.  With this in mind, hopefully I can be a bit smarter with my shopping this month.

What I'm lovin': Anthropologie

Despite the fact that I’ve known of the Tampa Anthropologie store for almost a year, I didn’t actually visit the store until just a few weeks ago.  This was my first time ever in Anthropologie, and I was amazed.  It felt like everything had been designed just for me.  All of the style were exactly what I craved, all of the items in the store resonated with me.  I walked slowly through the store in awe, gazing longingly at the beautiful housewares, coveting the gorgeous bags and shoes.  And oh, the dresses!  Yes, everything was expensive.   But I wanted it all.  Seriously.  I think this will become my new place to go when I have a good chunk of money to spend on clothes.  The fabrics were all quality, the designs spectacular, and the sale prices were decent.  And it resonates with me, and that is something I find very important when buying clothes.
