A Non-Niche Blog

Sarah Von at Yes and Yes had a great post today about tips for non-niche bloggers. I felt so inspired after reading it that I wrote a really long comment.  Here it is:

“Thank you for writing this post! I’ve gradually shifted my blog over the past year from being a daily outfit blog to a non-niche blog. There’s several topics that I write about a lot (style, sustainability, bentos, health, Etsy) but there’s not one individual thing. I recently changed my tagline to ” a little bit of this and that for the optimistic soul” and I’m so glad I did. It really sums up the tone of my blog, since I prefer to keep a positive perspective.

Thanks for re-affirming that I made the right choice. I was worried at first about losing readers, but now I enjoy writing my blog more than ever.”

I’m so happy that I got myself out of the box I had originally put myself into.  I started as a craft blogger, but then discovered the style world, and started only blogging daily outfits, but then as I discovered other interests, I wanted to write about them too, but I wasn’t sure how they would fit.  Now that I’ve accepted the fact that my blog doesn’t stick into one defined niche, I feel so free.  I can write about outfits or bento boxes or composting or my Etsy favorites or riding my bike,  always keeping what I consider my signature positive tone..  I may not have the statistics and sheer number of readers that I used to have, but I feel that the quality of my interactions with you, my readers, has improved dramatically since I shifted.  I don’t know if you noticed, by I updated my header recently by changing the tagline from “style and sustainability for the optimistic soul” to “a little bit of this and that for the optimistic soul”.

I just want to say thank to my readers for sticking with me and supporting me as I transitioned to where my blog is today.  It wouldn’t be anywhere near as much fun without you!

7 (New) Random Things

I have previously written a 7 random things post and a 6 random things post, but it’s been awhile, and Katrina of Pugly Pixel tagged me, so I figured it was about time for another 7 random things post.  This time it’s new and improved with photos!

1).  For the majority of my life, I had long hair.  It’s only been within the past few years that I’ve started wearing it short

2).  From Eighth grade until a few years ago, I wore contacts.  I switched back to glasses in the past few years for several reasons. 1) I discovered prescription sunglasses 2) glasses are cheaper, and I haven’t had vision insurance for three years, and 3) glasses are easier and more comfortable.

3)Elvis is technically my brother’s cat, and he lives with my parents (they only live 15 minutes away, so I visit him frequently).  He’s actually a sort of rescue cat.  Twelve (thirteen?) years ago, my brother was visiting a friend of a friend of a friend, and they had a kitten that they were abusing, feeding him drugs and throwing him against walls.  My brother hid the kitten in his jacket and brought him home.  He neglected to tell my mom for about a week, until she discovered the dirty litter box.  We’ve had Elvis ever since.

4) For the past three years, my boyfriend and I have taken a long weekend vacation at the beach every year.  Even though I only live an hour or so away from the beach, this is one of the few times that I go there each year.

5) A few years ago, I took some photography classes for fun.  At the time I wanted to become a professional photographer, and even though it’s become just a hobby for me, I still find the skills I learned there useful.

6) I have never taken classes in sewing, knitting or crocheting.  I would like to at some point.

7) For most of my undergrad  years, I never wore dresses or skirts unless I was at a wedding or funeral, and I only owned one pair of heels (the above pair).

Seven Random Things (Again)

random

I did a six random things post awhile back, but when the lovely ladies at academichic tagged me, I couldn’t resist doing it again.  So here’s another installment of seven random things:

1) Even though I primarily blog about style and crafting, I’m an avid reader of several foodbike and, home design blogs.

2)  When I get over-excited or enthusiastic, I seriously overuse the words “cool” and “that rocks”

3) I am jealous of people who have no roots tying them to one location

4) I’ve been knitting for six years, sewing for seven, and I learned to crochet about five years ago.  Crochet is my least favorite,  yet two of my crochet posts have received more traffic on my blog than anything else.

5) After playing Mega-man as a kid, I went through a phase where I wanted to be a robot designer

6)  My favorite tea is a blend of peppermint and chamomile with a teaspoon of honey.

7) Tommy Girl was my favorite perfume in middle and high school, and smelling it immediately takes me back to those days.

Busy, busy, busy…

My life has been insanely busy this semester, especially in the last week it seems.  Usually I end up spending my free time collapsing in front of the TV and knitting something really simple.  But yesterday I actually had a nice, big chunk of free time, so I got some sewing done.  I have been trying to work through the patterns in Sew U, tailoring them to fit me perfectly.  I haven’t done much pattern drafting or modification before, so I’m learning by trial and error.  After two attempts at trying to get the skirt right (the first one had too high of a waist, the second one was about 6 inches too wide)  I think I’ve finally almost got it.  I made this one by re-coning a pair of wide leg pants.

Thus these pants became this skirt:

Now you may have noticed that I said I almost got it perfect.  Here’s why:

See that lovely little wrinkle of fabric?  The skirt fits fine just below my waist.  It seems to fit my hips alright.  Yet the second I start to move after putting it on, it wrinkles like this, just below where the darts end.  I know there’s some readers out there who sew or at least know a bit more about fit than me.  How do I fix this?  I’m really happy with the overall look and fit of this skirt.  But this persistent wrinkle is driving me crazy, and I want to fix it before I continue to use the pattern for more skirts.  I’m considering going to a tailor to ask for advice.

6 Random Things (about me)

I was tagged by Sally of Already Pretty to write six random things about myself, so here they are:

  1. As a child, I was obsessed with Power Rangers.  To the point that I would spend my afternoons “training” to be a Power Ranger in my backyard, while listening to a cassette of the soundtrack of the show.
  2. Also as a child, I had a pet iguana named Murgatroyd.  For some reason, I was determined that I could teach him how to read, and made flashcards on popsicle sticks with the alphabet for him.  Sadly, it didn’t seem to work.
  3. During my first year of college, I hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon with my dad.
  4. I really love the taste of dill pickle juice.  Strange but true.
  5. I went for about 4 months without shaving my legs once.  I was studying sociology and was frustrated by the way society demands that women (and men) modify their bodies to fit social standards.  I do shave now, but I recognize that I am making a conscious choice to because I like having smooth legs, as opposed to solely doing it to please everyone else.
  6. I once spent 6 weeks living in Nicaragua, teaching English and working in soup kitchens.  I’m also semi-fluent in Spanish.

From what I understand, you’re supposed to tag six other blogs with these things.  If I tag you, go for it if you feel like it, but of course don’t feel obligated.
