Thoughts: On Brand Loyalty

I was organizing my shoe collection the other day (which really isn’t that large by many standards – I think I own maybe 20 – 30 pairs) when I realized something – when it comes to shoes, I am fiercely brand loyal.  The majority of my shoes fit into about 3 – 5 brands – I very rarely purchase shoes outside of those brands.

My Dansko Collection

With clothing, with accessories, I’ve never really been a brand loyalist.  There are plenty of brands that I love, but I don’t buy exclusively from them.  I own plenty of articles of clothing (that I’ve thrifted) from brands I had never heard of.  I have tons of jewelry that is thrifted or second-hand with no brand names attached.  So why is it that with shoes, I almost always buy from the same brands every time?

My Fluevog Collection

I think there’s several different factors at play here.  One is the difference in how I shop for clothes vs. shoes.  The majority of my clothing shopping is done at thrift stores, consignment stores and other second-hand stores.  I do go to the mall occasionally and I do by some clothing on eBay and online, but the majority of my clothes are second-hand.  Generally, when thrifting, I looks first for patterns, shapes and fabrics that I like and find interesting.  I look at the brand afterwards.  There are certain brands that I will go for if I find them – whenever I see J Crew, Anthro or Boden at a thrift store, I will almost always snatch them up.  But usually, I tend to go with whatever I find that looks good on.  This ends up being a lot of LOFT, Gap, Old Navy, Target, etc.  But I don’t really see it as brand loyalty, because I’m not seeking out those brands – I just happen to like a lot of what they offer.

My Keen Collection

In contrast, I buy my shoes almost exclusively on eBay or online.  I don’t really like buying shoes in retail stores, because they often seem to be overpriced, and I don’t like feeling pressured by sales staff to buy.  As I’ve been doing more and more online shoe shopping, I’ve learned which brands always work for me.  I know what sizes generally fit me in those brands.  I know what heel heights I like, and which I don’t.  I know what kind of straps will be painful, and which will be comfortable.  And I’m patient.  If a price is too high, I will watch and wait until it goes down, or I find a better deal.

This isn’t to say that every shoe I’ve ever bought from my favorite brands has been perfect.  I’ve had some that didn’t work out.  But the majority of the time, I know what works for me.

So I’m curious: are any of you like this?  Fiercely loyal when it comes to your shoe brands, but much more lax when it comes to everything else?

“Let’s go get me some glasses, a pocket protector, and some velcro shoes”

I suppose there’s really nothing nerdy about this outfit, although I do consider myself a nerd.  The shoes aren’t velcro, but they are slip-on, and are pretty much the comfiest shoes I own.  So much so, that I’m currently stalking a brown leather pair and a blue nubuck pair on eBay.  You can never have too many comfy shoes, right?

I think this outfit really demonstrates the effect that yoga has had on my style.  Yoga has helped me to realize the importance of being comfortable – of being able to move and stretch in whatever I’m wearing.

My practice of yoga closely coincided with when I started working in the school system, so things that were just fine for a desk job (heels, stiff fabrics, etc) were uncomfortable or downright painful for eight hours mostly on my feet.  Even my comfiest heels can’t handle a regular school day.

So, I’ve embraced my love of comfort style/ effortless chic.  Fabrics that are soft, that allow movement, shoes that are flat and supportive (but not hideous).  Cozy scarves to counteract air-conditioning.  If I can’t stretch my back without ripping a seam or popping a button, I probably won’t wear it.

The other thing I love about this outfit is that it was so thrifty.  I bought the tee, tunic and earrings at garage sales for a few bucks a piece.  The shoes came from eBay.  The only “pricier” items are the scarf (Express), and the leggings (Target)  but even those didn’t cost too much.  I love being thrifty :)

“I (heart) being awesome”

I love to find new ways to wear things.  I’ve had these black skinny jeans for a few months now, but it only just occurred to me last week that they would look absolutely awesome cuffed.  I think it creates a very chic and work appropriate look that is also super comfy.

My new white ruffle tee is so soft and comfy.  It felt a little too casual on it’s own, but once I added the handknit cardigan, it became a bit more polished.

It’s finally starting to feel like fall in Florida with temps in the *gasp* 70s.  I was actually able to wear long sleeves and scarves this week.  Of course, it warmed up by the middle of the day, but it’s nice to not feel drenched in sweat everyday.

Oh, did you happen to notice something new in this outfit?  Why yes, that is a new yellow purse.  Or at least, it was new a few months ago.  It’s so beautiful, that I was scared to take it outside of my house.  This outfit was it’s first official outing.

So here’s the backstory: back when I was underemployed, broke, armed with a master’s degree, and searching for a full-time job, I promised myself that whenever I got a (permanent) full-time job, I would treat myself to one of three things: 1) a watch, 2) a pair of Fluevogs, or 3) a new Morelle bag.  I found out in June that I would get to keep my full-time job (which I love), but money was tight, so I had planned to wait until the fall to get my treat.  Then, Morelle announced that she would be closing up her shop.  And my decision was made.

Despite money being very tight, I ordered a yellow leather slouch from her.  And it was over $200.  Which I did not count against my shopping plan because it was  special occasion.  But let me tell you: this. bag. is. the. best. bag. ever.

I love it so much.  The gorgeous yellow color, the soft leather, the roominess without bulkiness, the wrapped chain handle.  It is pretty much perfection in purse form.  I’ve treated it with water-resistant leather spray, and now that I’ve braved taking it out of doors, it will definitely be one of my regular purses.  Love.

“They’re only interested in clothes”

I’m not one to be vainly interested in clothes, but I am coming to the realization that my closet needs an overhaul.  I have a lot of great clothes that currently don’t fit, since I gained a little weight over the summer.  I have a lot of clothes that I don’t completely love – the fabric isn’t soft, the color is wrong, etc.  Some of these problems I can fix, but really, I mostly need to get rid of a lot of my clothes and buy some new duds that I actually really love.  I would estimate that right now, I only regularly wear about 25 – 30% of my closet on a regular basis.  I think I should maybe revisit my wardrobe inventory and wardrobe gaps lists, and really take a look at what I need.

I’ve also got another change in the works: I’m buying a pair of running shoes.  I’ve been wanting to do this for awhile, but good running shoes are expensive, and I didn’t have enough money saved up to afford a pair until recently.  I want to get a really good pair, because my feet pronate (or is it over-pronate?) – the thing where your feet tend to roll to the outside.  I like to wear running shoes that correct this, because it helps prevent injury, and I really don’t want to screw up my knees.

I used to run three times a week for about 20 minutes, but for the past several years, I switched to just working out at the gym, and then recently, I added yoga.  I absolutely love practicing yoga, but the gym just isn’t doing it for me anymore, and my membership rates are about to go up, so I’m thinking it’s a great time to take up running again.  We’ll see how it goes.

“I’d like otters to be friendly”

Ah, the perils of Florida summer dressing.  Outside, it is blisteringly hot and humid.  Inside, air conditioners are running at full capacity, making it freezing  As I’ve said before, with weather like this, layers are key.  I was attending some work trainings last week, and I had no idea how cold the building they were in might be, so I came prepared.  I had on a sleeveless blouse, and wore a cardigan and a light silk scarf for some extra warmth.  As it turned out, the A/C wasn’t working very well, so I ditched the layers inside.  But I’m telling you, if I hadn’t, the A/C probably would have been freezing.  I always prefer to be prepared for anything.

There’s nothing I love more than a soft, drapey outfit.  Lately, I’m finding myself more and more drawn to comfy, flowing outfits.  Maybe it’s just the vibe they give off, or maybe it’s because I’ve been practicing yoga more, and I’m really loving clothes that allow for a full range of motion.  Either way, I’m lovin’ this outfit.

Random note: Isn’t it awesome how my scarf and shoes match?  I was so excited when I realized this :)

Do you prefer drapey garments, and or structured styles more your thing?

Siesta Key Vacation: Part 2

Aww, we match.

Welcome to Part 2 of my Siesta Key vacation recap.  For the last day of our vacation, Carlo and I decided to check out Siesta Village.  It’s a lovely little stretch that has a mix of old-Florida kitsch, beach bars, tourist shops and awesome restaurants.  Apparently, Old Siesta Key had a thing for pink, because I kept finding it everywhere.  Carlo used to come here a lot as a kid, and he said that there used to be pink sidewalks.  This cracked pavement here might be the last remnant of those sidewalks, so I had to get a picture.

Siesta Market

Yum!

In keeping with my beach tradition, I had to get an ice cream cone.  This tasty awesomeness was a chocolate brownie fudge ice cream in a freshly made waffle cone from Big Olaf.  Super awesome.

Amazing salad

For lunch, we went to The Hub, and I had the most amazing Asian Salmon Salad.  I have got to try to re-create this – it was fantastic!

It was such a fantastic, relaxing vacation.  Too short, but awesome all the same.

Shopping Plan: Weeks 20 and 21

*Weeks 20 and 21 of My Great Shopping Plan of 2010, where I attempt to stay on a budget and fill out my wardrobe*

Since I was crazy busy last week (see this post for details), my shopping plan post this week covers two weeks.  When we left off on week 19, I still had $25 in my shopping budget for the month of June.  I’ve been trying to not shop too much, because I know that money is about to get really tight near the end of next month.  Still, I managed to find some pretty awesome deals these past two weeks.

Keen Sienna Mary Janes, $20 on eBay

I’ve been stalking Keen Sienna Mary Janes for a long time, but I never found any at a price point I could handle.  I’ve been wanting more comfy, casual flats in fun colors.  When these showed up on eBay (new, in box!) for this low of a price, I couldn’t pass them up.  They’ve instantly become one of my new favorite pairs of shoes, and I will be wearing them a lot.

After these, my black Keen Barcelonas, and my yellow Born flats, I think I’ll be set for stylish flats for awhile.

I also made a trip to Target, in search of a new swimsuit for my trip to Siesta Key last week.  And I found one of those magic Target reduced price items that only happens once in awhile.

Target Tankini, $5 on sale

Black and white print that will go with my solid swimsuit bottoms? Check.  Cute x-straps on the back? Check.  Support for the girls? Check.  Within budget? Check.

Of course, then I also bought two pairs of capri leggings, one black and one gray, for $6 each.  Which put me slightly over budget.  But I’ve been looking for capri leggings that don’t dig into my midsection for awhile, and these were perfect.  No pictures right now, because it’s been in the upper 90s the past two weeks.  Once it cools down, I’ll be wearing these leggings alot.

So with the shoes, the swimsuit and the leggings, I spent a total of $37, which was $12 over budget.  I’ll subtract $12 from July’s budget, so I’ll start off the month with $113.

Siesta Key: Part 1

Well, that was a bit more of a blogging break than I had originally intended.  I stayed in Siesta Key, FL, with my boyfriend, Carlo for three days last weekend.  (Is there a better word for a long-term, committed but non-married relationship?  When you’ve lived with someone for three years, it feels odd to still call them “boyfriend”).  I had blog posts all scheduled, and thought that I would write the next week’s posts on Sunday.  But Sunday also happened to be Father’s Day, so after lots of family time, I was too exhausted to write anything.  Then I had three days of all-day work training, leaving me even more drained.  So forgive me for not writing any posts this week, but I just did not have the energy with everything else going on.

So now, on to telling you about my awesome vacation!

Swimsuit: Target,  Sandals: Old Navy

Siesta Key Beach is absolutely gorgeous!  It was kind of bittersweet to be here, because I know that the oil spill is lurking out there in the Gulf.  It hasn’t come this far South yet, but no one really seems to know when it will get here and when it will get cleaned up.  I tried to savor my time at the beach as much as possible, because I don’t know how much longer the water will be this beautiful.

On the happier side of things,  this was one of the first times that I really didn’t feel negative about my body in a swimsuit.  So many times before, I’ve dreaded wearing swimsuits, but I found one that flatters me and that helped a lot.  But more than that, I also feel more confident.  It’s not an issue of accepting or masking certain “negative” areas of my body to me any more.  I have curvy hips and thighs, and that doesn’t bother me.  It’s how I’m made, and I’m not trying to fight it.  I eat nutritious foods, I exercise my body, and I try to take care of it with products that are good for me and the environment.  I’ve finally come to the point where I really recognize that I don’t need to fit into a certain image or body shape.  I am who I am.  I am made in a completely unique shape and size, and I love that.  Seeing this picture and not immediately worrying over my “flaws” helped me to realize that I’ve finally come to a really good place in my self-perspective.

Back to the vacation.  Do people play shuffle board in other states, or is it a Florida thing?  I’ve always associated playing shuffle board and being at the beach, so Carlo and I played a rousing game with our friends who were also staying in Siesta Key.

Keens

Carlo action shot!  (Shuffle board is exciting, people)

That water is so pretty.  I really hope that this oil mess gets cleaned up soon.

I’ll wrap up my vacation recap with Part 2 on Monday. Stay tuned!

Shopping Plan : Week 18

*Week 18 of My Great Shopping Plan of 2010, where I attempt to stay on a budget and fill out my wardrobe*

I overindulged a bit in May, so I started off June with $74 to spend on clothes, shoes and accessories.  Here’s what I got this week:

Keen Barcelona Flats,  $16 on eBay

I wanted to get a pair of cute, casual weekend flats, and I adore Keens for their insane comfort (and waterproofness), so I decided to snatch these up.  They were well loved by their previous owner, but I used a suede brush on them, and they perked right up.

Black Ann Taylor Loft sleeveless tee, $3
DKNY Salmon Tunic, $3
June Daisy Pajama Pants, $3
Red Tank (not shown) $1.50

A trip to Salvation Army last week yielded some pretty good finds.  I got two lovely sleeveless summer blouses, which are both in good shape.  I also got a casual tank for working out (not shown) and some adorable sheep-printed pajama pants, because I always need cute pajamas.

That makes a total of $26.50 spent so far, leaving me with $47.50 for the rest of June.
