“If you want to have fun without worry”

For several weeks, I thought I had lost this cardigan.  I searched all over the house, checked the lost and found box at work, but I couldn’t seem to find it anywhere.  Then one day, I remembered that I had recently moved my handknits to a different drawer while reorganizing my studio.  What a relief!  Nothing feels much worse than thinking you lost a cardigan that took you a few months to knit.

Finding my cardigan gave me the perfect excuse to wear my new belt that I got at Anthropologie last weekend.  I think I’m one of those types who likes to wear new things right away.  I’m really, really happy with this belt.  It filled a definite gap in my wardrobe, and I can tell it’s going to get plenty of use.

I’m really beginning to love wearing scarves tied up like this.  They keep my neck nice and cozy, and they still allow me to add an additional pop of color with a long necklace.  In this outfit, I echoed the color of the necklace by wearing a turquoise bracelet.  I really love mixing yellow and pale blue/turquoise.

Do you like to wear new things right away? Or do you prefer to save new items for a special occasion?

“The bracken shone like frosted silver”

We came so close.  So close to having snow in Tampa last week.  The temps dipped all the way into the 20s, the coldest I can ever remember being in Florida.  But then we didn’t get any snow.  Northern Florida got a light dusting, and so did Orlando.  But all Tampa got was rain and ice pellets.  Sigh.  (Did you know that there’s a Wikipedia page for Florida snow events?  I found this quite amusing.)

Those of you in the North who take outfit photos outside everyday in winter seriously deserve a medal.  I took these pictures as fast as I could, then hurried back inside to my warm, heated house.  I definitely loved the cold weather, but in a way I’m kind of glad that it’s starting to warm up again.  There’s only so many days in the 30s that a Florida girl can take.

I love how this cold snap has given me the opportunity to break out so many of my handknits.  I’m so proud of this scarf, because I spun the yarn on my drop spindle.  It’s super cozy and warm, and it’s long enough to wrap around my neck several times.  The way I tied it here is  something I’ve been trying ever since I saw this video.  I think it’s my new favorite way to tie scarves.

I’m also getting to wear my tweedy beret, which is special to me because I completed it on the first day of my trip to NYC, and wore it everyday while I was there.

“But my feet are tapping”

I’m trying to catch up the last few outfits of 2009, so instead of a category-style post today (shopping ban, wardrobe inventory, etc), you get an outfit post!  Next week, I’ll be reflecting on my shopping ban, as well as discussing possibilities for the new year.

I really, really love cold weather layering.  I feel like so many stylistic possibilities open up for me when I can wear tights, boots, sweaters and scarves.  This winter has really given me opportunities to play with color too, and I love the results.  This outfit features my ever versatile Express floral patterned dress.  I had no idea when I bought it way back in June that I would find so many different ways to wear it.  I linked to the six different summer variations of this dress on this post.  So far, I’ve had one other fall/winter variation before today.  I think I see many more to come.

I’m also trying out some red lip gloss with this outfit.  Since I rarely wear lipstick, a full-on red lip feels a bit over-powering to me.  I like how this gloss adds a subtle dose of red without being too strong.

I usually like to have at least two different accent colors in my outfits, so here I used a pretty blue necklace peeking out from under my scarf.  I really love the way aqua and red look together.

And here you can see how I layered tights again.  I decided to go a bit more subtle with this combination, so I chose a solid red tight with red lace tights on top.

"Where the wild wind whirled"

It’s a new year, but I’m still working on wrapping up outfits from 2009.  After these are done, I’m going to try to keep my outfit posts a little closer to when I actually wear the outfit.  Also, thanks to your suggestions on my quick reader survey, I’m tweaking my posts a bit.  Monday through Friday, there will be an outfit post every morning.  Etsy Love will now be midday on Wednesday, right in the middle of the week.  I’m also going to start a Link Love post on Friday afternoons, that will showcase my favorite links of the week.  Saturdays will be ongoing blog projects, like Wardrobe Inventory, Shopping Ban, etc.  Sundays will rotate between Shoe Lust and other topical posts, such as book reviews.

I’m also working on taking pictures at more interesting locations.  I recently discovered that the top floor of a parking garage makes for an interesting location.  The views are fun and they’re usually devoid of people. The view from this first photo is kind of amusing to me, because you can actually see two of my former places of employment in the background.  I guess I’ve had quite a few jobs on campus.

That green sweater vest in the first image is a recent re-construction project.  A few weeks ago, I got a green lambswool sweater at a clothing swap.  But it had a problem -I have to wear a layer underneath it, otherwise it’s insanely itchy, but the sleeves were too snug to allow any layers underneath.  So I cut off the sleeves, sewed up the armholes and made the neck into a deeper V.  Voila!  New sweater vest for no money!  You’ll be seeing this a lot while Florida is “chilly”

I really wonder how I ever managed to not own heather grey tights before.  These have quickly become my favorite pair of tights, so much so that I’m thinking of buying an additional pair.

I’m wearing my mom’s ring again for a pop of color in this outfit, and I thought you might appreciate a close-up.

And this is nothing but a gratuitous cat picture with my baby, Elvis (who’s not really a baby, at 14 years old).  After losing Brownie a few months ago, it greatly saddened me to realize how few photos I had of me and her together.  I want to make sure that doesn’t happen with Elvis.

Daily Outfit(s): Playing Catch-up

I had a couple outfits this past weekend that I photographed and absolutely loved, but hadn’t managed to post about yet.  So here’s Saturday’s and Sunday’s outfits, just a bit late.

On Saturday, my boyfriend and I went out for dinner and movie, something we don’t get to do as often as we’d like.  While I’m not a big fan of wearing black in the daytime during the summer, I thought that this black top was perfectly chic for a night out.  Plus, I wore this blouse a ton during my stay in New York last October, so wearing it makes me feel like I’m there again.

I really wish Issac Mizrahi still designed for Target.  This blouse is so amazingly soft, with a gorgeous drape and a ton of versatility.  I’ve worn it in a million different ways, but here I kept things simple and casual, layering it over a gray lacy camisole and scrunching up the sleeves.

That necklace is one of my newest Etsy purchases that I am so absolutely in love with.  I’ve been longing for some long necklaces like nobody’s business, and I really wanted something that was simple silver with touches of color.  This beautiful gem fit the bill perfectly.  Thanks Pixisette!  I will definitely be coming back for more.

Now for Sunday.  I spent the majority of the morning cleaning the house from top to bottom.  It was a lot of hard work, but it felt so amazingly relaxing when I was all done and had a completely clean house full of fresh air.  After getting myself cleaned up (isn’t it interesting how cleaning gets you dirty?) I wanted to keep this refreshed feeling in my outfit.  I went for light, summery colors, soft silhouettes and comfort.

I was so happy with this outfit, especially that gorgeous cotton/modal blouse that I just got at Anthropologie.  I swear, I would buy one of just about everything in their store if I had unlimited money.  For now, I just have to be satisfied with one or two items a month, since that’s all I can (barely) afford.  It’s so worth it though, because everything I get from them I absolutely adore.

The shirt has such beautiful details.  I tried to capture it in the following image, and while not perfect, it gives you an idea of the lovely textured neckline.  It also shows how the blouse picked up on the blue stripes in my skirt.  I love how this skirt can go with so many colors.
