“Scuffed his boot in the leaves”

The cold weather has officially hit Florida.  Temps have been in the 40s and 50s all week, so I’m back to my winter layering.  Thank goodness my Dansko Kylee boots arrived just in time.  Dansko was nice enough to send me a pair to try out (thanks Dansko!)  and I absolutely love them!  They are my new favorite boots ever.

Once it got cold this year, I realized that, while I adore my boot collection, none of them worked very well for eight hour days on my feet.  I needed a pair of flat boots that could provide all day comfort and style.  These boots are exactly what I was looking for.  They’re so insanely comfortable, that I don’t even feel like taking them off when I get home.  And they’re versatile – that knit top can be rolled down:

The chocolate suede with the side stitching detail fits in exactly with the kind of boho chic boots I’ve had in my mind for awhile now.  I’ve pretty much worn these every day since I got them.  If you like them, hop on over to Barking Dog Shoes, where she’s giving away a pair!

Yay for winter!

“Lots of sunshine today”

The weather is definitely warming up.  This was the first day where I started with tights and then had to ditch them.  While I’m happy that it’s spring, I have mixed emotions.  It feels great to not have to wear four layers just to leave the house, but at the same time, I feel so exposed without all my winter layers.  I know I’ll get used to it.  Spring is wonderful and bittersweet at the same time, because it means that my boots, tights and sweaters will once again be hidden in the back of my closet til October.

But the weather is so beautiful right now; I can’t stay grumpy for long.  We only get a few weeks of spring here in Florida before the brutal summer temps start to hit, so I want to enjoy these glorious days in the 60s and 70s while I can.  It is wonderful to be able to wear a light cardigan and have bare legs.  Soon it will be so hot, that I will be sweating like crazy after standing outside for five minutes.

I guess I’m just really mixed on my weather preferences.  Maybe I should live somewhere like San Diego.  The weather was so fantastic there when I visited back in October.  But then I would probably miss Florida.  I guess the grass is always greener.

Still, I’m feeling great, and I’m so excited to start my new job next week.  It will be so great to finally have a regular job with regular hours (and regular pay!).  I’d always fought the concept of a 9 – 5 (or in this case, 7 – 4) job but right now, I think that consistency is what I really need.  One day, I would love to own my own business (a vintage shop maybe?  or start an indie clothing line? or be a professional photographer?) but for now, this is really, really what I need.

How do you feel about the changing of the seasons?  What would your ideal climate be?

“You’re really quite lucky”

I’ve received so much support and encouragement from my readers since lamenting about my job situation on Monday, and I can’t thank you enough.  I feel so very lucky to be a part of such a wonderful, caring community.  My spirits have definitely improved.  You helped me to realize that there’s no point in dwelling on all the what if’s.  The right job will come along, and it will work out eventually.  I have to keep in perspective that this will probably be the hardest time for me in my career – which means that it can only get better from here.

Another antidote for blah days is wearing some of your favorite items.  For me, that means my favorite goldenrod Fluevog Malibrans, my oh-so-comfy Ella Moss dress, and a cozy handknit cardigan.  Wearing things that make you happy is a good way to get your spirits up.  In fact, I try to get rid of anything clothing that doesn’t make me happy when I wear it.  Life is just too short to wear boring or uncomfortable clothes.

This navy and white striped jersey dress really has become a staple for me.  I love how endlessly versatile a dress like this can be.  I’m curious to see how it will transition into spring and summer, though, since it generally requires layering to be decent.  I think if I get some lightweight slips and cardigans, it should work just fine.

What do you like to wear as a pick-me-up on days when you’re feeling a bit down?

Color plays a very important role in my personal style.  I always love to experiment with it and find new and interesting combinations.  But I’ve noticed that I usually won’t use more than two colors, and I rarely have three colors that are next to each other in the color wheel (Academchic would probably know what the proper term for that is).  For today’s outfit, I decided to push my boundaries a bit, and wear yellow, green and blue together.

I’m really quite happy with how they look together.  I think the fact the there’s only a little bit of green peeking out probably helps to make it look balanced and not over-whelming.  I though about wearing my red coat with this as well, but I decided that would make me feel a bit too much like a box of crayons.

Might I mention that I am completely in love with my new scarf?  It’s so warm, and the elastic ruching makes it so easy to casually wrap it around my neck.  It makes me feel like a French woman who just effortlessly throws a scarf around her neck and instantly looks chic.  Anthro still has it (in four colors)!

What are your favorite color combinations to wear?  Do you tend to stick to the same ones, or do you love to try out new mixes?

"A Sunny, Sweet Smile"

Oh how I love Ebay!  I’ve been longing to own some J. Crew cashmere pretty much since I became aware of its existence, but their sweaters tend to retail at $150 plus a pop, so they’ve been out of my graduate and now post-graduate-still-searching-for-a-permanent-job budget.  But it didn’t dawn on me until recently to simply look for one second-hand on Ebay.  I scored this gorgeous sunshine beauty for a mere $50!  And it is the softest, most luxurious thing I have ever owned.  The color is so fantastic.  This has quickly elevated itself to a new wardrobe staple for me.

Wearing items of good quality does something to you.  Having soft, comfortable fabrics close to the skin just makes you feel so good.  I think that every one should own at least one 100% cashmere item.

This outfit, by the way, is also what I decided to wear to Eyeliah‘s virtual birthday party.  Nothing like a pretty dress and a sunny cashmere cardigan for dancing the night away, virtually or otherwise.

“Everyone had to stay indoors”

In winter, it’s so easy for the daylight to get away from you.   I didn’t have time to take photos on my lunch break this day, and I went to IKEA after work, so by the time I got home, it was dark.  But, at least it gives me an excuse to show off my teddy picker trophy wall.

I’m really loving cold weather layering.  It’s like getting to wear three outfits in one every day.

I think that the teal of the tunic I layered works with the navy stripes in the dress.  Multiple shades of one color can sometimes be tricky, but this combination came out alright.

"Where the wild wind whirled"

It’s a new year, but I’m still working on wrapping up outfits from 2009.  After these are done, I’m going to try to keep my outfit posts a little closer to when I actually wear the outfit.  Also, thanks to your suggestions on my quick reader survey, I’m tweaking my posts a bit.  Monday through Friday, there will be an outfit post every morning.  Etsy Love will now be midday on Wednesday, right in the middle of the week.  I’m also going to start a Link Love post on Friday afternoons, that will showcase my favorite links of the week.  Saturdays will be ongoing blog projects, like Wardrobe Inventory, Shopping Ban, etc.  Sundays will rotate between Shoe Lust and other topical posts, such as book reviews.

I’m also working on taking pictures at more interesting locations.  I recently discovered that the top floor of a parking garage makes for an interesting location.  The views are fun and they’re usually devoid of people. The view from this first photo is kind of amusing to me, because you can actually see two of my former places of employment in the background.  I guess I’ve had quite a few jobs on campus.

That green sweater vest in the first image is a recent re-construction project.  A few weeks ago, I got a green lambswool sweater at a clothing swap.  But it had a problem -I have to wear a layer underneath it, otherwise it’s insanely itchy, but the sleeves were too snug to allow any layers underneath.  So I cut off the sleeves, sewed up the armholes and made the neck into a deeper V.  Voila!  New sweater vest for no money!  You’ll be seeing this a lot while Florida is “chilly”

I really wonder how I ever managed to not own heather grey tights before.  These have quickly become my favorite pair of tights, so much so that I’m thinking of buying an additional pair.

I’m wearing my mom’s ring again for a pop of color in this outfit, and I thought you might appreciate a close-up.

And this is nothing but a gratuitous cat picture with my baby, Elvis (who’s not really a baby, at 14 years old).  After losing Brownie a few months ago, it greatly saddened me to realize how few photos I had of me and her together.  I want to make sure that doesn’t happen with Elvis.

Daily Outfit: Red, White, Blue (and Green)

I bought these Born Biddy boots just before my shopping ban began, yet somehow, this is the first time I’ve photographed them where you can actually see them.  I love these boots.  They’re very comfortable, look amazing with tights and add a nice pop of red.  The only disadvantage is that it’s really hard to walk on grass or dirt in them, because the heel is pretty narrow compared to most of my shoes.  That doesn’t stop me from loving them.

I liked the red, white and navy combination, but I felt it would be boring if I just paired it with a similar or neutral colored bag.  The contrast of my green purse perks things up a bit, don’t you think?

I think these boots might make my legs look a bit short.  That worried me for about two seconds, but then I chose to ignore it and focus on how much I loved wearing this.  Because sometimes, it really doesn’t matter if things make you look shorter.

Daily Outfit: Social No-no's

Inspired by Kimberly’s Inspiration Calendar, I decided to try a color combo that I’ve never ventured into before: navy, black and brown.  I usually shy away from all-neutral combos, because I really love color.  But I still found this a fun experiment.

The funny thing is, the entire day, I kept thinking about a character I performed in a play in high school.  She was Estelle, leader of the popular clique.  My main line was this: “Oh my God, did you see what Becky was wearing at the party last night? A brown belt and black shoes.  Ugh.  That is such a social no-no”.  This made me smile, since I was totally breaking that rule today.

I think that this look might have worked better with a short black cardigan, but since my only black cardigan didn’t really work with this dress (because it’s a crew neck) I had to improvise.  I think it would have looked fantastic with a cropped black blazer as well.
