A neutral kind of day

Okay, so I did in fact wear a very similar outfit last September.  But hey, that was a year ago, and I have long hair and glasses now, so I think it’s just fine for me to post this version.

I had originally planned to put together a mustard and navy outfit.  That is, until I realized that my favorite mustard cardi was in the wash.  So I decided for lovely and elegant neutrals instead, with a pop of mustard in my bracelet.

I love how this little navy dress can work with just about everything.  It really is a year-round staple for me.  The fit is absolutely perfect, the navy color goes with everything (although I often wish I had it in brighter colors), the length is perfect for work.  I can wear it alone in the summer, and layer it up in the winter.  It’s definitely one of my best consigning finds yet.

“I have my own heart”

Hello folks!  My week off was wonderful and refreshing, and I feel like I’ve got a lot of great new ideas for Smiles Go With Everything.  As you may have noticed, I spent part of my time last week re-vamping the look of the blog, and I am so incredibly happy with it!  It feels great to actually be able to apply what I learned in my web design class last year, and I have to say that I felt quite pleasantly nerdy spending two hours last week playing with CSS, HTML and Photoshop.

You may have also noticed that my blog’s tagline has changed to read “style and sustainability for the optimistic soul”.  As I mentioned last week, I want to shift my focus slightly.  Sustainability is an issue that is near and dear to my heart, and I am fascinated by the way that it intersects with personal style.  I want to spend more time digging into that issue, and in particular I want to talk even more than before about shopping second-hand, hand-made and local.  As always, I will be talking about these issues with an optimistic perspective.  It can be easy to get depressed when talking about how much humans have screwed up the environment, but I would rather focus on the positive side of what we can do to make things better, as opposed to dwelling on the negative side.

This is still a style blog, and I will continue to post Daily Outfits, Etsy Love posts and tell you about how I shop in my weekly Shopping Plan posts.  I’ll still talk about how I alter clothes to work for my figure.

For now though, there probably will be fewer outfit posts than before.  With my current schedule at my job (which I love!), it’s hard to get four outfit photos every week.  It was getting to the point where it was becoming a chore for me, as opposed to something I enjoyed doing.  For right now, I’m only going to post outfits twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays.  If I can get to a point where I can take more outfit photos every week without it feeling like an obligation, then I may increase the number of outfit posts.  At this time, it’s just about figuring out what kind of a schedule works best for me.

Outfit posts will definitely always be around, though.  I think that they are a vital part of this blog, and they fit in perfectly with my new focus on sustainability.  I put a great emphasis of shopping second-hand and hand-made in my personal life, and outfit posts are a a great way to demonstrate that it is completely possible to be stylish in a way that is not detrimental to the environment.

I’m very excited about all the great new things to come, and I hope that you are too!

“Oh the jobs people work at!”

I wore this last week when meeting the district support team for media specialists.  I wanted to be polished and professional, since this was my first time meeting most of them.  I think the outfit came together quite nicely.  All the color allowed me to feel “me”, but the structure of the blazer and pencil skirt plus the smart heels kept me looking sharp.

Putting together outfits like this over the next few months will be very important.  I want to make sure that I am constantly making a good impression, because how I do over these next few months will determine whether or not I get to work at the same school in the fall.  Learning to dress in a way that is professional, while still incorporating my own personal style, is going to be an enjoyable challenge.

I love how it looks like I’m flying in that picture.  Fun pictures really are the best pictures ever.

“Wake up the street”

Between starting my new job as a media specialist (school librarian) today and letting go of the pressure I was putting on myself with blogging and blog-reading, I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.  I’m free now to enjoy life, I’m free to take fun and happy photos, I’m free to stop worrying quite so much about making it to my next paycheck, I’m free to participate in this lovely blogging community because I want to, not because I feel obligated.  It’s amazing what a change in perspective can do to lift one’s spirits.

My smiles feel genuine again, and I’m enjoying writing this blog and sharing with my readers more than ever.  It is so good to have an outlet where I can share with others, to have an excuse to take fun and joyful photos everyday, and to hopefully pass some of that happiness along to others.

When I took these photos, I had just finished up a long and stressful day of dealing with bureaucratic paperwork and processing for my new job, wrapping up tasks at my old job, and retrieving my car that had been at the mechanic for almost a week.  But when I took these photos, I was able to leave all that stress behind and have fun.  Having fun is the best stress-relief ever.

Do you incorporate a little fun into your life everyday?  Why not jump in a puddle while wearing wellies? Skip rope? Draw with sidewalk chalk?

“Lots of sunshine today”

The weather is definitely warming up.  This was the first day where I started with tights and then had to ditch them.  While I’m happy that it’s spring, I have mixed emotions.  It feels great to not have to wear four layers just to leave the house, but at the same time, I feel so exposed without all my winter layers.  I know I’ll get used to it.  Spring is wonderful and bittersweet at the same time, because it means that my boots, tights and sweaters will once again be hidden in the back of my closet til October.

But the weather is so beautiful right now; I can’t stay grumpy for long.  We only get a few weeks of spring here in Florida before the brutal summer temps start to hit, so I want to enjoy these glorious days in the 60s and 70s while I can.  It is wonderful to be able to wear a light cardigan and have bare legs.  Soon it will be so hot, that I will be sweating like crazy after standing outside for five minutes.

I guess I’m just really mixed on my weather preferences.  Maybe I should live somewhere like San Diego.  The weather was so fantastic there when I visited back in October.  But then I would probably miss Florida.  I guess the grass is always greener.

Still, I’m feeling great, and I’m so excited to start my new job next week.  It will be so great to finally have a regular job with regular hours (and regular pay!).  I’d always fought the concept of a 9 – 5 (or in this case, 7 – 4) job but right now, I think that consistency is what I really need.  One day, I would love to own my own business (a vintage shop maybe?  or start an indie clothing line? or be a professional photographer?) but for now, this is really, really what I need.

How do you feel about the changing of the seasons?  What would your ideal climate be?

“Time to go back to school”

I have some very exciting news to share: I got a job!  Starting in a few weeks, I’m going to be working as a media specialist (school librarian).  The position only goes until the end of the school year, but it puts me in a very good place to get a permanent position in the next school year.  I’m so excited, and a bit nervous too!  I’m not sure yet how it will affect my blogging.  I plan to continue posting at the same rate, but I probably won’t be able to comment on other blogs as often as I have in the past.  I’m going to be diligent in setting aside some specific time to devote solely to blogging, so hopefully I can stay on track.  Also, I’m planning on buying a lap top, which will help me stay on top of things.

It was spring break at the college that I work at this week, so I got up the courage to take pictures in a semi-public place, this neat H2O sculpture (see how they look like atoms? or whatever the proper term is) by the science buildings.  I got a few strange looks from professors, and one guy on a golf cart asked me what I was doing.  I just said that I was working on a project, which is the easiest answer to give when on a college campus, and we got into a friendly discussion about cameras.  It felt so empowering to take pictures where people could actually see me, as opposed to my usually habit of finding deserted and empty areas.

These are my new Gap curvy jeans, and I am in love.  I altered the leg to make them into straight-legged jeans following my tutorial.  I’m planning on nipping in the waist a bit too, just so they can fit without a belt.  They’re so soft, and the dark premium denim wash is gorgeous.  A word of warning though – the dye on washes like this will rub off on things like light colored purses.  Usually it’s easy to clean off.

Do you feel awkward taking pictures of yourself where others can see you?

“The sky had darkened to deepest purple”

When eShakti offered to let me try out one of their dresses, I was more than happy to oblige.  There’s many things about this online retailer that I love: they have beautiful styles in a wide range of colors and sizes (0-26W).  They tell you right away what the fabric content of every item is, which is very important to me.  But what I love best of all is the fact that they will customize sizes and change certain elements of items such as the hem and sleeve length for an additional fee.  So many times I will see an item that I love on a website, but I won’t like the cap sleeves, or there won’t be enough room in the hips.  eShakti eliminates that problem by changing it for you.

This dress was customized from the original with a shorter hem and 3/4 sleeves.  The color and fabric are fantastic, and the craftsmanship is very good.  It’s such a beautiful dress, and I love the ruffle detail at the neckline.

Unfortunately, I don’t think it was the right choice for my body type, because it doesn’t flatter my hips.  I had to wear another dress underneath to remain decent, because whenever the wind blew, it would fly open.  However, this has everything to do with the wrap styling of the dress, which was the one I chose.  I still consider it to be a quality product, and I will definitely buy from eShakti again.  I’ll likely get this red dress soon in a knee length, since I need more solid colored dresses.

I’m so happy that I was able to wear this outside without a sweater or jacket.   It’s finally starting to feel like spring again. I’m feeling so ready to shed some layers and enjoy the warmth that Florida is well known for.

“Ready to kick up their heels”

I am continuing to adore this magenta cardigan I got for Christmas.  I’m discovering that drape cardigans are insanely versatile.  Last week, I wore it draped with a pair of skinny jeans and a blouse. For today’s outfit, I paired it with my little black dress and my goldenrod Malibrans.  Yellow and magenta was never a color combination I had given consideration before, but now I’m discovering just how great it is.

I love how the soft, light fabric of this cardigan ties up perfectly as a bolero.  I tried tying it back as a wrap sweater as well, but I didn’t like the effect, as it visually added bulk.  I love how tying it as a bolero adds a bit of waist cinching.

As you may know from previous posts, scoop neck of this dress is really low, and requires some layering underneath to be decent.  I originally tried a solid colored blouse for today’s look, but then I decided  that adding a bit of black and white pattern would complement the rest of the outfit best.

What color or pattern combination have you tried lately that surprised you?

“Everything will look like butterflies”

Yep, I love my new cardigan so much, that I couldn’t resist wearing it two days in a row.  And I’m feeling tempted to wear it pretty much constantly, even while lounging around the house in pajamas.  It seems that cashmere has that effect on people.

The color scheme of this outfit was inspired by a recent colour lover post at Pugly Pixel.  When I first saw this sunshine colored cardigan, it immediately me me think of that beautiful color combination of yellow, aqua, and white.

Layering multiple pearl necklaces is such a great way to jazz up an outfit.  And it always makes me think of Coco Chanel and her rows upon rows of pearls.

"A Sunny, Sweet Smile"

Oh how I love Ebay!  I’ve been longing to own some J. Crew cashmere pretty much since I became aware of its existence, but their sweaters tend to retail at $150 plus a pop, so they’ve been out of my graduate and now post-graduate-still-searching-for-a-permanent-job budget.  But it didn’t dawn on me until recently to simply look for one second-hand on Ebay.  I scored this gorgeous sunshine beauty for a mere $50!  And it is the softest, most luxurious thing I have ever owned.  The color is so fantastic.  This has quickly elevated itself to a new wardrobe staple for me.

Wearing items of good quality does something to you.  Having soft, comfortable fabrics close to the skin just makes you feel so good.  I think that every one should own at least one 100% cashmere item.

This outfit, by the way, is also what I decided to wear to Eyeliah‘s virtual birthday party.  Nothing like a pretty dress and a sunny cashmere cardigan for dancing the night away, virtually or otherwise.
