Oceanside, CA (Part 1)

A few weeks ago, I traveled with my boyfriend and his family to Oceanside, CA for a week.  I’d been to Southern California once before, for my boyfriend’s brother’s wedding.  This time we were traveling to meet his brother and sister-in-law’s brand new baby girl.  It was a really fun relaxing trip.  I could totally see myself living in Oceanside, if I didn’t have such deep ties to Tampa.  If I ever save up enough money, I’d love to buy a timeshare there that I could live at every summer.

Walking on the beach in California is amazing.  The sand is a lot darker than Florida’s, which seems more natural to me, since we import a lot of our white sand here.  There’s all these beautiful, smooth beach stones all over the place.  I brought a couple home with me.  And the waves!  I loved getting up early in the morning to sit out on the beach and watch surfers catch the waves.

Oh and the weather!  70s and 60s everyday.  I could wear jeans and a cardigan outside – in June! – and not get sweaty – even after walking for an hour.  That never happens in Florida summers.

I wore my Keen Sarasotas pretty much everywhere.  They continue to be the best beach shoes ever.  Even if they did give me minor blisters after walking for 3 + miles in them.

Me and Carlo on the Pier in Oceanside.  This is one of the best places to people watch.  Surfers, fishermen, locals, tourists – everyone ends up here.

Siesta Key: Part 1

Well, that was a bit more of a blogging break than I had originally intended.  I stayed in Siesta Key, FL, with my boyfriend, Carlo for three days last weekend.  (Is there a better word for a long-term, committed but non-married relationship?  When you’ve lived with someone for three years, it feels odd to still call them “boyfriend”).  I had blog posts all scheduled, and thought that I would write the next week’s posts on Sunday.  But Sunday also happened to be Father’s Day, so after lots of family time, I was too exhausted to write anything.  Then I had three days of all-day work training, leaving me even more drained.  So forgive me for not writing any posts this week, but I just did not have the energy with everything else going on.

So now, on to telling you about my awesome vacation!

Swimsuit: Target,  Sandals: Old Navy

Siesta Key Beach is absolutely gorgeous!  It was kind of bittersweet to be here, because I know that the oil spill is lurking out there in the Gulf.  It hasn’t come this far South yet, but no one really seems to know when it will get here and when it will get cleaned up.  I tried to savor my time at the beach as much as possible, because I don’t know how much longer the water will be this beautiful.

On the happier side of things,  this was one of the first times that I really didn’t feel negative about my body in a swimsuit.  So many times before, I’ve dreaded wearing swimsuits, but I found one that flatters me and that helped a lot.  But more than that, I also feel more confident.  It’s not an issue of accepting or masking certain “negative” areas of my body to me any more.  I have curvy hips and thighs, and that doesn’t bother me.  It’s how I’m made, and I’m not trying to fight it.  I eat nutritious foods, I exercise my body, and I try to take care of it with products that are good for me and the environment.  I’ve finally come to the point where I really recognize that I don’t need to fit into a certain image or body shape.  I am who I am.  I am made in a completely unique shape and size, and I love that.  Seeing this picture and not immediately worrying over my “flaws” helped me to realize that I’ve finally come to a really good place in my self-perspective.

Back to the vacation.  Do people play shuffle board in other states, or is it a Florida thing?  I’ve always associated playing shuffle board and being at the beach, so Carlo and I played a rousing game with our friends who were also staying in Siesta Key.

That water is so pretty.  I really hope that this oil mess gets cleaned up soon.

I’ll wrap up my vacation recap with Part 2 on Monday. Stay tuned!

Advice: What to wear to a Florida beach wedding?

(Note: I’ve decided to switch up the order of my weekend posts.  Shopping posts will now be on Sundays, while Shoe Lust and other topics will be on Saturdays)

Caranday Dress by Anthropologie (no longer available online)

One of my readers, Elizabeth, sent me a question about appropriate accessories for a Florida wedding, and I thought that my advice could be useful to others attending spring weddings in warm climates.

Diana,

I have a Florida specific style question I thought you could help me out with. I’m attending a wedding with my boyfriend in Jacksonville in late April. All of his best friends from high school and college will be there (most of whom I’ve never met) and I’d like to make a good impression. However, I have very little idea what sort of wedding this will be and don’t know any other women attending that I can ask. I bought the Caranday Dress on super sale at Anthropologie after Christmas and plan on wearing that (see above).   The sash is attached and a dark gray color. There is enough length to tie it either in the front or the back). I was wondering if you could give me some insider information on Florida trends/weather that would help me know what accessories to add. Will it be too hot for tights? Should I bring a sweater or shawl as a cover up? Are flats okay for an evening wedding with a plated dinner? I’m also hoping not to have to spend too much money on this though I have been wanting a pair of gray shoes anyway. Help!

Elizabeth

The first step I had Elizabeth take was to check the wedding’s website.  Often nowadays the bride and groom will set up a website or blog with information about the wedding, including location, appropriate dress, etc.  We found out that the ceremony will be on the beach, and the reception will be a plated dinner at an outdoor area of a restaurant within walking distance of the ceremony.

The dress that Elizabeth bought is gorgeous, and I think that it will be just fine.  Floridians tend to be pretty casual in general, and I think that this dress is dressy enough for a beach wedding without going over the top.  The weather here can be a bit unpredictable, but more than likely it will be too warm for tights by April.  Honestly it’s been too warm in the past week, and usually by April we’re in full-on Spring, almost Summer.  Generally temps tend to be in the 60s, 70s  and sometimes 80s in April, although the weather is always unpredictable.  Micro-fishnets or lace tights might work for an April wedding, but they probably won’t be necessary, and I wouldn’t recommend legwear any warmer than that.

Since the wedding is in the evening, it would be a good idea to bring a shawl or light, cropped cardigan to keep your shoulders warm.  Everything is outdoors, so you won’t have to worry about frigid air-conditioning.  Night-time at the beach often means a light sea-breeze, which can be a bit chilly.

A basic pashmina in a coordinating color (or contrasting for a bit of fun!) would be lovely.  A light cotton cardigan would also be wonderful for keeping shoulders warm.  Stick with a cropped length, because they are generally more flattering with dresses than longer lengths.

Favourite Cropped Cardigan, Boden, $58

I would say that it’s better to have some kind of heel or wedge since this is an evening wedding.  You can get away with flat strappy sandals at a beach wedding, but having a slight heel looks a bit dressier.  Since the wedding is on the beach, a chunky heel or a wedge is best.  Beach sand is pretty soft, and thin heels will sink in.  Also, avoid suede, because it is possible that the sand might be wet.  Wearing shoes with a strappy design and an open toe is a good idea, because it is inevitable that sand will get in your shoes, and wearing a more open shoe makes it easier to get the sand out.  It’s also good if the shoe is easy to take on and off, because it’s possible that some people may go barefoot for the ceremony.

Basically any comfortable, wedge sandal in white, grey or silver should work fine.  Strappy sandals are always popular in Florida, and I think that they can look a bit dressier than other varieties of shoes for this occasion.

For other accessories, I would recommend some elegant, understated jewelry such as a strand of pearls and some light silver bangles.  Add a simple clutch to all this, and the outfit would be all set for a lovely Florida beach wedding.

Daily Outfit(s): Beach Fun

(As I’m adjusting to a new work schedule this week, and as my tripod is broken, this week will be another set of scheduled topic-related posts. Next week, I’ll get back to regular daily outfit posting)

I’m getting into the swing of work again.  I’m starting a new job later this week as a temporary media specialist at an elementary school (basically a school librarian).  This is set to last until Thanksgiving, at which time I’ll go back to my old job if I don’t get a permanent position.  I’m really excited about it, because I’ll be gaining valuable work experience.  I’ll also be working full time for the first time in awhile, so I’ll have to really learn how to budget time.  I’m finding that I’m enjoying my blog reading most when I have a solid block of time to read, which is usually on Thursdays or on the weekend.  So if I comment on your blog several days after you posted, that’s probably why.  I’m still managing to get posts written, but the biggest challenge will be getting good outfit shots.  I have to be at work at 7:00 am, so I leave the house before the sun rises.  I’ll have to adapt to taking pics in the afternoon I guess.

Anyhow, I promised you a beach trip re-cap, and this is it.

beach

This was the view from our hotel room.  We stayed at this beautiful and quirky hotel, the Nordvind at Treasure Island, FL.   Everyone there was super nice, and the location was perfect, because there weren’t insane amounts of tourists on this part of the beach.

bridge

We frequently crossed the bridge to Madeira Beach and John’s Pass Village, a fun and somewhat touristy destination.  The above image is a view of some construction debris from the bridge.  For some reason, I find industrial things really beautiful.

beach reading

I love to get in some good beach reading, and this time it was Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions.

I try to vary my swim suit top necklines so that my tan lines don’t get too strong.  Normally, I don’t like bohemian styles, but there’s something about the crazy casualness of the beach that makes this paisley top fit in perfectly.

My boyfriend got me this dress for my birthday back in February, and I always get compliments when I wear it.  People never believe me when I tell them it’s from Busch Gardens, a Tampa theme park.

And you’ve already met my new Keen Sarasotas a few days ago.  Best beach shoes ever.

That’s it for my beach re-cap.  Hopefully I’ll get back into the swing of regular outfit posts soon.

Daily Outfit: Day at the beach

Well, I’m slightly behind on posts now, since my vacation is officially over and I’m back to work and school today.  At the end of my vacation time last week, I got to spend a day at Fort de Soto beach with family and friends.  I usually don’t like to go in the water when I’m at the beach, so I decided to wear a cute and lightweight cotton sundress with a hat to beat the heat.

The dress was a birthday present from my boyfriend.  It’s yet another one of my duds from Busch Gardens (the hat too).  The theme park is a surprising place to find decently priced casual wear.  My only rule is that I’m not allowed to wear the items in the park, as that would be far too tacky.  The dress is a bit revealing, even for the beach, so I wore a black camisole underneath.  It would probably work nicely with a swimsuit top too, but I didn’t have one that matched the cut well.

I chose to take wear the tote with the outfit for three reasons:  I think outfits tend to look best when they have at least two different non-neutral colors, in this case red and blue.  This certainly isn’t a hard and fast rule, but it often works.  Also, since the rest of this outfit is predominantly warm colors, I wanted to pair something cooler with it.  Finally, this tote can hold all the stuff I wanted to bring to the beach in it.

This is the last of my vacation posts, so tomorrow it’s back to work-appropriate outfits.  Get ready to see some sewing and knitting too.  I’ve finally cracked the code on a skirt pattern I’ve been revising, so you will certainly be seeing it soon.
