Etsy Love: Singing in the Trees

When I was a freshman in high school, I took a T.V. Production class.  Our first project was to videotape a slideshow of photographs and set it to music.  I loved being outdoors, so I thought it would be neat to make a slideshow showing the lifespan of an oak tree – from acorn, to baby tree, to a glorious, full grown oak tree.  I took all these photos around my yard, picked out some music, and made what I thought was a great slideshow.  Apparently, my classmates all thought it was lame, and for the rest of that semester, everyone in that class called me “tree-girl”.  In today’s Etsy Love post, I’m embracing that high school nickname with some gorgeous tree-themed jewelry pieces from Etsy.

Being Green: Retractable Clotheslines

I recently bought a a retractable clothesline on Amazon.   I wanted something that was easy to set up and take down, because I didn’t want to have a permanent clothesline in my backyard.  This Moerman one works very well.  It has two 49 foot lines, although so far, I’ve only needed one.  I attached it to the wall of my house, and then I attach the other end of the line to a chain link fence about 40 feet away.  I rigged up a line support about half way along the line, using a flower pot and a piece of plastic piping, but I’m going to try to find something more sturdy eventually.  Without the support in the middle, the line droops really low.  I’m really loving this so far, and it’s great to be able to dry my clothes naturally without using up any energy.  It’s been so hot lately (high 90s most days), that a load barely takes an hour to dry, which is how long I usually run the dryer anyhow.

I’m not one to romanticize the life that housewives of the past had, but it does give me a sort of domestic satisfaction to hang clothes out to dry.  Or maybe that’s not the right word.  I find it relaxing to be outside, in the sunshine.  I find it satisfying that I’m not wasting energy when the sun provides all the drying power I need.  And I feel a connection to the past, when people used to actually put a little physical effort into keeping their house clean, instead of letting machines do all the work for them.

The apron is a souvenir from when I lived in Nicaragua for six weeks back in 2005.  In the markets, the vendedoras always wore these aprons to keep change in.  They would be selling anything from Coca-Cola to gum to bananas to ice cream, but they all wore these beautiful, colorful, frilly aprons.  I feel in love with the look of these aprons, so I bought one for myself.  The inner pockets are huge, and there’s more than enough room for all the clothespins I need.

Siesta Key Vacation: Part 2

Aww, we match.

Welcome to Part 2 of my Siesta Key vacation recap.  For the last day of our vacation, Carlo and I decided to check out Siesta Village.  It’s a lovely little stretch that has a mix of old-Florida kitsch, beach bars, tourist shops and awesome restaurants.  Apparently, Old Siesta Key had a thing for pink, because I kept finding it everywhere.  Carlo used to come here a lot as a kid, and he said that there used to be pink sidewalks.  This cracked pavement here might be the last remnant of those sidewalks, so I had to get a picture.

Yum!

In keeping with my beach tradition, I had to get an ice cream cone.  This tasty awesomeness was a chocolate brownie fudge ice cream in a freshly made waffle cone from Big Olaf.  Super awesome.

Amazing salad

For lunch, we went to The Hub, and I had the most amazing Asian Salmon Salad.  I have got to try to re-create this – it was fantastic!

It was such a fantastic, relaxing vacation.  Too short, but awesome all the same.

Shopping Plan: Weeks 20 and 21

*Weeks 20 and 21 of My Great Shopping Plan of 2010, where I attempt to stay on a budget and fill out my wardrobe*

Since I was crazy busy last week (see this post for details), my shopping plan post this week covers two weeks.  When we left off on week 19, I still had $25 in my shopping budget for the month of June.  I’ve been trying to not shop too much, because I know that money is about to get really tight near the end of next month.  Still, I managed to find some pretty awesome deals these past two weeks.

Keen Sienna Mary Janes, $20 on eBay

I’ve been stalking Keen Sienna Mary Janes for a long time, but I never found any at a price point I could handle.  I’ve been wanting more comfy, casual flats in fun colors.  When these showed up on eBay (new, in box!) for this low of a price, I couldn’t pass them up.  They’ve instantly become one of my new favorite pairs of shoes, and I will be wearing them a lot.

After these, my black Keen Barcelonas, and my yellow Born flats, I think I’ll be set for stylish flats for awhile.

I also made a trip to Target, in search of a new swimsuit for my trip to Siesta Key last week.  And I found one of those magic Target reduced price items that only happens once in awhile.

Target Tankini, $5 on sale

Black and white print that will go with my solid swimsuit bottoms? Check.  Cute x-straps on the back? Check.  Support for the girls? Check.  Within budget? Check.

Of course, then I also bought two pairs of capri leggings, one black and one gray, for $6 each.  Which put me slightly over budget.  But I’ve been looking for capri leggings that don’t dig into my midsection for awhile, and these were perfect.  No pictures right now, because it’s been in the upper 90s the past two weeks.  Once it cools down, I’ll be wearing these leggings alot.

So with the shoes, the swimsuit and the leggings, I spent a total of $37, which was $12 over budget.  I’ll subtract $12 from July’s budget, so I’ll start off the month with $113.

Bento Boxes: 5-25, 5-27

I’m running way behind on posting my bento photos, so I’m going to post two each Saturday for awhile to catch up.

Siesta Key: Part 1

Well, that was a bit more of a blogging break than I had originally intended.  I stayed in Siesta Key, FL, with my boyfriend, Carlo for three days last weekend.  (Is there a better word for a long-term, committed but non-married relationship?  When you’ve lived with someone for three years, it feels odd to still call them “boyfriend”).  I had blog posts all scheduled, and thought that I would write the next week’s posts on Sunday.  But Sunday also happened to be Father’s Day, so after lots of family time, I was too exhausted to write anything.  Then I had three days of all-day work training, leaving me even more drained.  So forgive me for not writing any posts this week, but I just did not have the energy with everything else going on.

So now, on to telling you about my awesome vacation!

Swimsuit: Target,  Sandals: Old Navy

Siesta Key Beach is absolutely gorgeous!  It was kind of bittersweet to be here, because I know that the oil spill is lurking out there in the Gulf.  It hasn’t come this far South yet, but no one really seems to know when it will get here and when it will get cleaned up.  I tried to savor my time at the beach as much as possible, because I don’t know how much longer the water will be this beautiful.

On the happier side of things,  this was one of the first times that I really didn’t feel negative about my body in a swimsuit.  So many times before, I’ve dreaded wearing swimsuits, but I found one that flatters me and that helped a lot.  But more than that, I also feel more confident.  It’s not an issue of accepting or masking certain “negative” areas of my body to me any more.  I have curvy hips and thighs, and that doesn’t bother me.  It’s how I’m made, and I’m not trying to fight it.  I eat nutritious foods, I exercise my body, and I try to take care of it with products that are good for me and the environment.  I’ve finally come to the point where I really recognize that I don’t need to fit into a certain image or body shape.  I am who I am.  I am made in a completely unique shape and size, and I love that.  Seeing this picture and not immediately worrying over my “flaws” helped me to realize that I’ve finally come to a really good place in my self-perspective.

Back to the vacation.  Do people play shuffle board in other states, or is it a Florida thing?  I’ve always associated playing shuffle board and being at the beach, so Carlo and I played a rousing game with our friends who were also staying in Siesta Key.

Carlo action shot!  (Shuffle board is exciting, people)

That water is so pretty.  I really hope that this oil mess gets cleaned up soon.

I’ll wrap up my vacation recap with Part 2 on Monday. Stay tuned!

I’m back

Just got back yesterday from my awesome mini-vacation to Siesta Beach.  And now I immediately have several full day trainings for work.  Why did I plan my schedule this way? Grr.  Anyhow, I’m not going to have time to write any posts for a few days, so just know that I’m here and fine.  I just didn’t plan very well.

Bento Box: 5-12-10

Grilled chicken
Spinach and feta salad
Yellow and Orange bell pepper slices
Hummus
Whole Wheat Crackers
Grapes

I think I could pretty much live off of variations of spinach and feta salad.  I eat this almost every day.  It’s good that I do, because I have been border-line anemic in the past, which means I need the extra iron.  I’m getting to the point now where I don’t even like to eat romaine lettuce, because I’m so used to the texture of spinach.

What I’m Lovin’: Zoya Nail Polish Exchange

I realize that this may be old news to some of you, but I’ve only recently started learning about all the nasty chemicals that are in most traditional nail polishes.  Ingredients like Formaldehyde, Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Camphor and Toluene are all frequently used in nail polishes, and can be very toxic to your health.

Zoya is one nail polish company that refuses to use any of those ingridients, and they have a gorgeous array of colors to choose from (they’re vegan too!).  To encourage you to give up your old nail polish, they have a Nail Polish Exchange promotion going on for the rest of this month.  If you send them six or more bottles of your old nail polish to recycle, they will match you bottle for bottle with their polish at half price ($3.50 a bottle), no shipping added.  I only have three bottles of old polish, so I’m going in on this with some friends.  I think that this is a really great deal, and it’s a great opportunity to make your beauty routine a little bit greener.
