“It was a good and beautiful place to live”

Once the weather finally started to warm up last week, I decided it would be fun to ride my bike down my local neighborhood park by the Hillsborough River to take pictures.  It’s such a lovely location; I really should ride down here more often.

Riding a bicycle in a wrap skirt is… interesting.  I was fine for the most part, except whenever a strong wind blew.  Luckily, I could hold the handlebars with one hand and hold my skirt down with the other, since I was on local streets.

I like this outfit overall, but I’ve noticed that this wrap skirt is not the most flattering shape on me.  It makes my hips look a lot wider than they actually are.  I think next time, I might try to balance it out a bit, maybe with a bolero or a cropped cardigan?  Or maybe I should just un-tuck the blouse?

Any suggestions on how I could style this skirt to make it more flattering?  Or should I give it to Goodwill?

  1. Oh, what a lovely local park you have there! I’m actually not sure that pairing it with a bolero would make the skirt more flattering. I think it has to do with the way the skirt hangs. It’s a little bit – for lack of a better word – frumpy. It’s a shame because the rest of the outfit is fantastic!

Seconded. If you’re afraid that your hips appear too wide in it, a bolero is going to accentuate that.

Love the outfit! I agree with the others, though, that the skirt itself is the problem – not necessarily the way that it’s worn. I think the illusion of width is created by the slight pulling there at the join, and that the front part of the wrap pulls at a diagonal instead of straight down.

On a happier note, I LOVE the pearls/cardi/patterned blouse combo! :-)

  4. I love the LOFT top and it looks great with the green. I agree about the skirt … I think it’s the look of it pulling that’s the problem. Especially sits it sits right there at the front. Could you maybe wear it backwards or put that part more towards the side? Not sure either of those would like right either though. Sorry! It’s a bummer when a piece we like just doesn’t work out so well.

I would try untucking the blouse and belting it at your waist maybe? If you can’t find a way to wear it that you like, I say donate it! I can see why you’re unsure of it, and there’s no sense in wasting time in clothes you don’t feel fab in.

I think I agree with everyone that this skirt isn’t working. I’m realizing now that there’s a reason why it’s been languishing in my closet – it just doesn’t work for me. To the consigning pile it goes!

  7. Sally says:

I second Kelly – I think a longer blouse or shirt worn over the skirt and belted would look fab!

Pretty much I agree with everyone else, and can I also add- I love the new setting. It looks gorgeous behind you and yeah, you look awesome too!

  9. Linda says:

I have a similar shaped skirt that also languishes in my closet because I never know what to pair it with to make it flattering. If you find a solution please post it as mine is also heading for the consignment pile!!

You win some, you lose some. Luckily, smiles really do go with everything. Including crappy skirts :)

Oh cute! I love the outfit. and the location makes me a little nostalgic. Watch out for the gators. ;-)

Beautiful background. Love the boots! I’ve never had any luck with wrap skirts like that. They’ve always looked too boxy and wide and shapeless on me.
