RIP Brownie (1992-2009)

brownie

I don’t normally like to get too personal on my blog, but I decided to go ahead and write this post as a sort of memorial or eulogy.

On Wednesday morning, I got one of those stomach churning phone calls you never want to receive.  The kind where your mom tells you in a very serious voice that she has bad news.  My cat, Brownie, who lived with my parents, had been having health problems for a little over a year.  We knew that she didn’t have much time left.  On Wednesday morning, she had an accident in the middle of a room, and then was unable to go to the bathroom.  My  mom took her to the vet, who gave her a fluid shot to help the dehydration she was experiencing because her kidneys were starting to fail.  They said that she would have a few days more if we gave her shots, but that her other organs would start failing quickly.  I decided when her health problems began that I didn’t want to selfishly make her suffer just so that I could have her longer.  So when we determined that she would only be in more pain if we kept her alive, we decided to have her put to sleep.

This is by far one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life.  Brownie was my first pet; I got her when I was only 8 years old.  Before she was allowed in the house, I used to sneak her into my room under my shirt so that I could play with her.  I think my mom knew what I was doing, but she let me anyhow.  She never scratched me when I tried to dress her in my Cabbage Patch Doll’s clothes.  She would always know when I was sick or upset and would curl up on my bed with me.  Brownie lived a long, full and happy life, and she was able to leave this world peacefully without a lot of pain.  I was with her right until the very end, and I am so grateful that I was able to say goodbye to her.

This post is not meant to be a pity party.  I just wanted to have a place to remember and honor my little girl.  I love you Brownie.  You will be missed.

(Regular posts will resume tomorrow, and I’ll announce the winner of the leggings contest  tomorrow too)

  1. Oh I’m so sorry :-(
My first pet was also a cat called Brownie. She passed away a long time ago.
Losing a pet hurts so very much and there are those who won’t understand that at all, but just know that there are lots of us who empathize completely and are sending you a big collective hug.

  4. I had to make that same awful decision for my baby girl Poe last Wednesday. It was heart wrenching & I will never forget. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. Please know that you did what was best for her & that she loves you.

  5. Beautiful Brownie–you know that your cherished kitty had a wonderful life. I know how hard it was for you. My little Jesse live 20 years, through single life, 2 marriages and kids. He was my best friend and when he had to go I placed my head against his and looked into his eyes. It was hard, but I am so very glad I did. I am so sorry for your loss, but treasure his life. Now thoughts of Jesse bring a smile to my face. You will get there too. xxxxxx
