Daily Outfit: A Little Bit Punk

3867890145_abdc7b9f1d

I love punk rock.  I could listen to The Clash, Iggy Pop and the Replacements all day.  And I love the diy ethos of punk.  Still, I’m not exactly a studded leather and combat boots type of girl.  But I love to find ways of incorporating elements of punk rock into my style, making outfits that can be tough yet elegant.  So this is what I wore while I was out and about on Friday.

Magadog is a local ska band in Tampa.  I went to one of their shows a few months back, and got this t-shirt, which was originally an all white crew neck.  I took out the sleeves and replaced them with black ones and then replace the neck to make it a scoopneck.  I took in the sides to make it a bit more fitted.

Just a note, my tripod broke soon after taking these pictures.  I’ve ordered a new one, and I’m going to try to find a temporary solution until it comes in the mail.  Otherwise, I might just stick to non-outfit posts for a few days.  We’ll have to see.

Shoe Lust: Clarks Bahama Beach

bahama beachClarks Bahama Beach  $80 on Zappos

Even though Florida will still be hot for a few more months, mentally I am beginning to prepare myself for fall.  Thus I see this shoe lust as a kind of last blast of summer, before I really kick into boots, pumps and flats of all kinds.  This gorgeous, red patent slingbacks really could be worn on all but the coldest of days, yet something about them screams “summer” to me.  They would look amazing both with dresses and skinny jeans.  In the fall, they would look awesome with a pair of black tights.  If you’re looking to get a pair, be sure to do some Google searches before you buy, and check your local Clarks store.  You’d be surprised at the deals you can find on Clarks, if you look hard enough.

Shopping Ban: Week 3

Fluid Movement

Fluid Movement Top in Dark Gray  $58

I still didn’t spend any of my thrifting/Etsy/vintage allowance this week, so I’ll be saving it up and hopefully get some awesomeness on Etsy.  There will probably be a post soon debating what I should get.

Per my shopping ban rules, I am allowed one $50 free day per month, which I can spend wherever I please.  I am also allowed to spend gift money on whatever I please, since it isn’t a part of my budget.  Today, I took my free day for August and went to Anthropologie with Alechia.  And I realized that it’s very hard to find something for under $50 at Anthro.  Since I got some money for my graduation, I could go a little bit above that amount, but I exercised some restraint.

Eventually, I narrowed my choices down to this plum v-neck tank, this wine v-neck blouse, this amazing navy cardi/blazer and the above blouse.  I really, really loved this wool bolero, but it was way out of my price range.  I ended up deciding on the Fluid Movement top in charcoal grey for several reasons.  It looks amazing on me.  It’s in a color that I don’t have a lot of, but would like to have more of.  It’s a solid.  And the main reason: it has a neckline that is very different from many of my other blouses.  I have a lot of v-necks, and while I loved both v-neck blouses, I wanted something different.  The cardi/blazer was amazing as well, so I’m going to wait and see if it goes on sale.

You may notice that the price of this blouse was over $50.  I used $8 of my graduation money to cover the rest, so it’s not cheating.

I felt like I really exercised a lot of restraint while at Anthro.  I would normally have spend $200+ and bought all of the items I loved, but instead I spent some time thinking carefully about what I really needed.  I like the way this shopping ban is making me think.

Daily Outfit: New Hair!

I’ve been loving my hair cut.  The last few times I’ve gone to get my hair done, I’ve felt like they were the best hair cuts I’d ever had.  But at the same time, I don’t like to get into a rut.  I decided that when I got my hair cut yesterday, I would change it slightly.  So I decided to go for a bit more bangs – and I love it!

The new ‘do looks absolutely amazing with headbands.  I’m looking forward to try new ways of styling it.  If you haven’t tried a new style with your hair for a long time, go out and spend some money on a nice hair cut.  It’s an accessory you wear everyday, so you want it to look its best.  Cut out some photos of a look that you love, and have a good talk with your stylist about what will and won’t work for your hair.

This outfit is actually a combination I wear frequently, but have never managed to photograph.  While I love the mix of colors, I do feel that the outfit has a bit too much volume, which can make me look heavier than I actually am.  I’d love to get a slimmer, more structured blouse in this color.

And don’t forget, my necklace giveaway ends tonight (Friday) at midnight, Eastern Standard Time.  There’s still time to enter!

Daily Outfit: Cozy Sweaters

Even if the weather is ridiculously warm outside, nothing works quite so well on blah days as my favorite jeans and a comfy, cozy sweater.  My office gets pretty cold, so it works just fine indoors.

I actually had a different outfit planned for yesterday, but I woke up feeling like I didn’t really want to deal with the day.  I scraped my original plan and went with what felt good.  Sometimes you just have to listen to what your instincts are calling for.

By the way, I’m making my photos clickable now, so if you click on outfit photos, you’ll be taken to their Flickr page.  I guess I just didn’t realize I could do this before, but now that I’ve learned how, I think it will make my posts that much better.

Did you know that this shawl pin was my very first Etsy purchase?  I bought it in June 2008, and I continue to be amazed at all the awesome offereing Etsy has.

Etsy Love: Layered Chain Necklaces

I’ve been noticing a few layered chain necklaces appearing on the front pages of Etsy, but when I actually began searching for them, I was amazed at just how many I found.  I guess they’re a new trend for the fall, although whether or not something is trendy doesn’t really matter to me.  I love the edgy look of them, and I think they would be perfect  for creating a tough yet elegant look by pairing them with more feminine pieces.  I’ve selected just a few of the ones I found, but try searching with the terms “layered chain necklace” on Etsy to see the full gamut.

Daily Outfit: It's Never Enough

I realize that I’ve gone on and on about my love for Dansko Nolita wedges, so please bear with me as I gush once more.  I mentioned not too long ago that I really wanted to get the Dansko Nena boots so that I could continue to enjoy my favorite Dansko wedge once the temps turn cold.  Well, just before I started my shopping ban, I lucked out and got a pair on Ebay, in my size, in the exact color that I wanted, for $125.  And I just couldn’t wait for fall to wear them.

full

I think these have become one of my favorite pairs of shoes ever.  They’re comfortable, they look great, they’re mid-calf, which is becoming my favorite boot height.  I’m in love.  I will be wearing these a ton.

3843113231_781d95bf21

They were fully worth the hunt and money.  I don’t normally like the look of wedge boots, but these are an exception for two reasons: 1) The heel is a different color from the rest of the boot, setting it apart so I don’t look like I’m wearing blocks on my feet, and 2) the indentation on the wedge heel makes it look more like a traditional heel.

By the way, this outfit employs a trick I learned from Stacy and Clinton (but intuitively understood as well).  When you wear a pattern with several colors in it, pick one or two of them to accentuate with accessories.  In this case, I pulled out the green and tan by wearing a green necklace, green purse and tan boots.

Shoe Lust: Vintage White Leather Boots

il_430xN.71436109

Vintage Mod White Leather Boots (already sold)

Endless Summer Vintage

This shoe lust is different from my usual fare.  Instead of lusting after a particular shoe from a particular brand, this shoe lust is very general.  I love the look of flat white leather boots, classic mod vintage.  This pair was one that really caught my eye, and I think it gives you a good idea of what I’m craving.  These already sold, which is probably good for me, because that helps get rid of the temptation to  cheat on my shopping ban.  I think I could really rock some boots like this, paired with tights and dresses, or worn over skinny jeans.  I’ll just have to keep my eye out for now.
