Daily Outfit: From Gathers to Darts

I had one of those monday mornings yesterday where I felt tired, cranky, and un-eager to deal with the rest of the world.  It took me about an hour to get dressed, as I kept feeling unsatisfied with everything.  I finally selected one of my new tops from my work/interview shopping to wear, only to discover that there was one problem.  See if you can figure it out.

You guessed the baggy fabric underneath my chest right?  This beautiful wrap top is a nice structured cotton, perfect for the summer.  But for some reason, the designer decided to place gathers a good two inches below the bust line, leaving lots of extra fabric where it isn’t needed.  I ended up wearing the top like this most of the day, but I when I got home, I broke out my seam ripper and sewing machine.  This is normally something I would take to a tailor but 1) I was feeling really ambitious and 2) I wanted it now.  I took out the gathers, pressed them flat, made new darts that ended at the bust line.  I sewed them back in and voila!  a much better fitting blouse!

Like I said, this is one of the fabulous items bought recently at Nordstroms, along with my gorgeous teal top that you saw yesterday.  Since this is sleeveless, I wouldn’t wear it to an interview.  But it’s great for a regular day of work, and it looks amazingly sharp over a pencil skirt.  You’ll be seeing the rest of my interview wear soon, which includes my fab pencil skirt, a pinstripe blazer, and a silk black and white printed top.  Since almost everything was on sale, I got all these items, alterations to the blazer, and a pair of Spanx, for less than the suit I was originally going to get from JCrew would have cost me!  I never would have thought of Nordstrom as a bargain before!  (Of course, I should note that the money for my interview clothes came from extra money I took out this semester for this specific purpose, not from my regular budget)

I’m so glad to finally have some jeans at the right length for heels.  All my other pairs had been hemmed too short.  With these, I specifically tried them on with shoes my average heel height (about 2 3/4 inches) and then hemmed them so they would fall about 1 inch from the ground.

My shoes end up just peeking out from under my jeans this way, but the longer hem creates a much nicer line.

Daily Outfit: Finding My Color

Lots of people spend a good amount of time (and sometimes, money) trying to figure out what colors are the most flattering on them.  But sometimes, we just stumble upon it.  I’ve mentioned before that I like how I look in blue, so I’ve acquired a lot of shades of this color over time.  Just recently, I’ve discovered a color that works even better for me.  I’m not sure exactly what it’s called, but it’s in-between blue and green, almost like teal with a little extra green added.  I found a top in this color while thrifting recently, and it’s become one of my favorites.  Then, while suit shopping at Nordstrom’s, I found the most gorgeous top I have ever owned.  And let me say, I am in love.

I love everything about this top: the amazing color, the delicious drape, the length of the sleeves, the elastic band at the bottom.  And it was even on sale!  This top is amazingly versatile.  It works equally well worn over pants as it does tucked into skirts.  This is going to be my interview blouse, tucked into a smart black pencil skirt, with a black pinstripe blazer worn over it.  The top can also be stretched to tunic length, which isn’t very flattering on my body type, but could look awesome on someone who’s super-skinny.

And did you notice the shoes I’m wearing up there?  I lamented a few weeks ago that I had fallen in love with the discontinued Dansko Novalee and was unable to find a pair in my size anywhere.  Last week, Ebay came to my rescue, and I found a pair in the size and color that I wanted!  They are so amazingly comfortable.  The footbed provides a lot of support, even with that tall wedge.  The straps are nice and soft, so I haven’t been getting blisters. I think I’m going to get more shoes in this Dansko family, as I adore both these and my Dansko Neves

Just a reminder, I’ve got a contest going on right now for a gorgeous Tolani scarf from Chickdowntown, so go check it out if you haven’t entered yet.

Frye Engineer Boots  $188

It’s 95 degrees outside, and here I am blogging about boots.  But these have caught my attention and won’t let go.  I was shopping at Urban Outfitters with my boyfriend the other day, and when he saw them he freaked out and almost made me buy them, stating that I would look amazingly hot wearing them.  I haven’t bought them yet, since I still have that um, budget thing, but I’m definitely keeping my eye on them and watching for a sale.  I could see myself wearing this style of boot a lot in the fall and winter.  It would go equally well with skirts, dresses or pants, and I love the tough mixed with girly style that can be achieved with them.

Daily Outfit: All About the Shoes

Today’s Inspiration Calendar challenge was an easy one for me: make it all about the shoes!  Anyone who owns a pair of Fluevogs has this in the bag.  I decided to wear my beautiful Fiorenzas.  I kept the rest of the outfit simple, going with my favorite black dress, an orange cami to match the shoes, and a few, simple turquoise accents to keep the color palette from being too warm.

full body shot

I just recently bought that camisole at Gap with the express purpose of wearing it with these shoes.  Does anyone else buy clothes to match their favorite shoes?

I wear this Kira Ferrer initial necklace all the time, but I’ve never taken a close-up before.  Apparently, the trend of wearing necklaces with your name came from Carrie of Sex and the City.  I’ve never actually watched that show or the movie.  I just like the simplicity and sweetness of wearing your initial.

And let me re-iterate once again – buy colorful shoes!  They really can go with a lot more than you realize.  And if you have one pair in each color of the rainbow, you’ll always have something that goes with your outfit.

Daily Outfit: Keep it Simple

Going once again with the Inspiration Calendar, Tuesday called for a simple patterned dress, which work well considering that it was the hottest day so far this summer, with a heat index of 110!  A nice, light dress was exactly what I needed on a day like this.  The heat was unbearable, so I spent as much time as possible indoors.  I actually started to feel light-headed midday, which is bizarre, because I drink insane amounts of water every day.

dress

This dress was a recent Express purchase, and I absolutely love it.  The print, the drapey neckline and the deep back all lend a nice elegance to it, while the short and simple serged hem keeps it from being overly dressy.  It looks great both belted and unbelted.  If I get some more coupons, I may go back for another one in black or blue.

back

I love how easy it is to accessorize a simple black and white dress.  There are so many possibilities and combinations.  For today’s look, I was aiming for slightly more professional, since I had to deal with some potential employment related paperwork.  I threw on a black cardigan while indoors to make it a bit more work appropriate.  I still haven’t had any more interviews, but I’m not giving up hope!

clarks

I love my new Clarks Apple Sky.  They’re very comfortable and elegant.  I love that the toe box  is pointier than most of my other shoes, but still doesn’t squeeze the life out of my feet.

Daily Outfit: Monochromatic Blue

Going with Kim’s wonderful inspiration calendar again, I went with monochromatic blue for Monday.  This challenge surprised me – I figured it would be easy, since I have lots of blue in my wardrobe, but when trying to put something together, I realized that many of the shades don’t work well together.  I finally went with blue jeans (which were fine indoors, but oppressively hot outdoors), a tank and a cardigan (which was indoors only).  I added some contrast by wearing a navy scarf as a headband, carrying a navy tote, and throwing in some brown sandals so it wasn’t too monochromatic.  Neutral silver jewelry topped it all off.

head to toe

That cardigan was a recent Anthropologie sale purchase.  I adore it, but I hadn’t worn it yet because of the ridiculous heat wave we’ve been experiencing in Florida lately.  It was just right for my nice, chilly office though.  What I love most about this cardigan is the gorgeous details, like the fabric covered buttons, the matching placket lining, the adorable pockets, and the contrasting bands.  The texture is also very unique, as it’s a reverse stockinette in fair isle.  This will be getting tons of wear in the fall.

This outfit also lets me debut my new Born Savory sandals.  I got these a few weeks ago, while looking for a comfortable, strappy sandal.  They took a few days to break in, but now they’re relatively comfortable, only giving me blisters if I do lots of walking.  I love them so much, I’m thinking about buying a second pair in orange or blue, since they’re on sale right now at 6pm.

savory

In the afternoon, I ditched the cardigan, traded the sandals for Chucks, and played tourist with my boyfriend and some friends of ours.  We went to Ybor City and Channelside, which are essentially the touristy districts of Tampa.  We had some delicious fish tacos at Memas Alaskan Tacos, a very popular spot with the locals that I’d never actually been to.  Then we took the trolley (which is sadly inefficient and impractical) and took it to Channelside, where we went bowling at Splitsville.  There’s several pictures over on my Flickr, so I won’t inundate you with all of them here.  I’ll just leave you with a picture of me bowling, so you can imagine my crazy happy dance when I got a strike.

Etsy Love: Handmade Luxury

Today’s Etsy Love is going in a slightly different direction than usual.  For this post, I’m featuring items in my favorite list that are over $100.  This may seem to go against my frugal ways, but hear me out.  One, if you spend $100 on something from Etsy, that $100 is going directly to support an artist, rather than some department store or corporation.  Two, if someone on Etsy is charing $100+ for their wares and people are buying regularly for them, the chances are quite good that the items are of very good quality and will last you a long time.  Three, many items in this price range are extremely unique, so you never have to worry about someone else wearing the same thing as you.

Daily Outfit: Saturday Shopping

On Saturday, I was on a mission.  Find something to wear to an interview, and dress comfortably and stylishly enough to feel good even though I was a bit stressed out.  I had ordered a suit from JCrew, which was amazing quality, but I didn’t like the fit, and with as much as it cost ($396!!) I wanted something that I would absolutely love.  So I trekked out to International Mall, to return the JCrew suit and see if I could find a substitute.  When I took it back to the store, they offered to send a different size with no shipping charges, but it wouldn’t arrive until mid-July, which would be too late for my interviews.  So I started walking around the mall to scout out some other suits.  I knew that I wanted a skirt suit, and that I preferred pinstripe if I could get it.  I finally struck gold at Nordstroms.   You’ll be seeing some snazzy new work and interview looks soon!  Now, here’s what I wore while shopping:

I was so happy in this ensemble.  The fabrics were all very soft and comfortable (cotton, silk, etc).  It was exactly what I needed.  And I even tried out tucking a shirt into a skirt again.  I think it’s growing on me.

3644421619_462b5e450f

That gorgeous little cotton silk skirt was one of the treasures I found recently at Anthropologie.  It took me awhile to decide whether or not to buy it, as I knew the price tag ($100) would make me go over budget.  But I absolutely loved how it looked on me.  I loved the softness of the silk cotton blend.  I loved the button details on the pockets.  And when I found out that it was machine washable, I was sold.  So, um, I’m over budget again.  But I’m loving my new clothes!  Next month I’ll get back on track (really).

This super comfy elastic vintage belt worked perfectly with this outfit.  It stays on nicely, adds an extra bit of color, and brings everything together.  My faithful lime green purse added another pop of color, keeping things from getting too  monochrome.

So I normally don’t go for couture.  And I would probably never actually wear these shoes, even if someone gave them to me for free.  They look like they would be murder on my feet, if I could even manage to walk.  But, like the Fluevog Answer, I see these shoes as a work of art.  Something that I would place on a shelf in my living room and admire for their amazing craftsmanship, design and beauty.  If you’d like to see what these look like in action, check out Sea of Shoes.  That girl has some seriously amazing shoes, and seriously good photography.

Every girl has it…

me

(photo by me, of me in 2006)

You know what I’m talking about.  That type of day where everything you try on makes you look/feel like a cow.  That day where your body is suddenly full of every possible imperfection.  That day where your hair refuses to do anything that you want it to.  That day where you spend an hour trying to find an outfit in your bursting closet only to wear the exact same thing you wore last week.

Ladies, I’ve been there.  And I think it’s safe to say that every female has  experienced this at least once in their life, if not once a week.  Not matter how beautiful or self-confident we are, there will always be days when we feel like sh*t.  There will always be days when we are way too hard on ourselves for the minor amount of belly fat we gained over the past few months.  There will always be days where we can’t stand what we see when we look in the mirror.  And even when we just recently spent a lot of money on new clothes, there will still be days where we feel like we have nothing to wear.  It happens.  To everyone.  Men and women.

On these types of days, it can be really hard to be kind to yourself.  But that is the key to making it through.  Maybe, instead of trying to come up with something amazing to wear that day, you should throw on a standby that you know and love, like your favorite jersey dress, or those jeans that fit you just right.  Maybe, instead of punishing yourself for a few pounds gained with a three hour spin session at the gym, you should go for soothing walk somewhere that helps you feel calm and clear your head.  Maybe, instead of throwing away all your clothes in frustration, you should consider what in your closet needs alterations, what items simply don’t work, and what items you really need to make you feel good in your skin.  Maybe, instead of trying to force your body into all the latest trends,  you should focus on buying clothes in fabrics and cuts that make you feel good while wearing them.

Because nothing is more important than  feeling good in your own skin.  No matter what size you are, no matter where your lumps and bumps reside, if you feel good in what you’re wearing and who you are, you will project beauty.  But if you’re feeling crappy about yourself, then no matter how much physical beauty you have, no matter if you are a size 18 or a size 2 or anything larger, smaller or in-between, you won’t appear as beautiful.  Beauty is much more about a feeling of confidence and self-worth than it is about size, or hair color, or skin texture or anything else physical.   To feel good in one’s own skin is beauty.  And some days it’s not easy to feel that way.   And that’s okay.  Life is a learning process.  There will be up days and there will be down days.  We just have to learn to make it through the down ones, and savor and relish in the good ones.
